To mark the annual London to Brighton race, the Bonhams auction house also holds an auction of old cars (and automobilia). In keeping with the occasion, all of the vehicles on offer have a vintage up to and including 1905.
On October 31, 2014, the time has come again. Before the 118th running of the "race", which as always leads from London's Hyde Park to Brighton beach and commemorates the first edition on November 14, 1896, Bonhams will be auctioning off 22 vehicles with which it would be possible to participate.
Anyone who thinks that the cars can be bought cheaply will be disabused by the impressive estimated prices. On average, each car is said to be worth £ 153,068 (CHF 233,227 or Euro 192,000). However, the swings are considerable.
Three cars from the 19th century
Three vehicles were built before 1900: the Daimler Twin-Cylinder 6hp Wagonette from 1898, the Locomobile Type 2 3½hp Spindle-Seat Runabout from 1899 and the Peugeto Type 26 from 1899.
The remaining vehicles were built between 1900 and 1905. Incidentally, older does not mean more expensive in this context; the Locomobile Type 2, for example, is one of the most favorable offers with an estimated price of £ 28,000 to 32,000 (CHF 42,000 to 49,000, Euro 35,000 to 40,000).
Panhard et Levassor as a figurehead
Bonhams announces the Panhard et Levassor Model KB Four-Cylinder Side-Entrance Phaeton from 1903, which was once owned by the Spanish aristocrat Marcques von Ivanrey, as the "Star of the Show". Ricardo Soriano was the man who bought the car new and registered it as the 18th automobile ever in Spain.
What is interesting about this car is that it only required minimal renewal until 1975 and is still largely in its original condition today. The car took part in the London to Brighton Run just last year and is now said to be worth £ 600,000 to £ 700,000 (CHF 910,000 to 1.1 million, Euro 750,000 to 880,000) according to Bonhams.
Stately CGV
Another rare and comparatively luxurious motorized automobile is the CGV 6 1/4-Litre Type H1 Four-Cylinder Phaeton from 1904, which was once purchased by Olyr Roederer, owner of the famous champagne manufacturer.
Between 2006 and 2013, the car took part in the London-to-Brighton Run every year and obviously delighted the owner with its great reliability. Now it is to find a new owner for £ 390,000 to £ 440,000 (CHF 590,000 to 670,000, Euro 490,000 to 550,000).
The auction will be held at Bonhams' premises on New Bond Street.
Further information and detailed descriptions of the vehicles in English can be found on the Bonhams website.
