If the 1950 Triumph TRX had been a success, the British sports car world would have looked very different for decades. But instead of developing the TRX further, the 20 TS and then the TR2 were created, which laid the foundations for the great successes of Standard-Triumph. The TRX, however, disappeared and was almost forgotten. This report tells the story of Triumph's first modern post-war sports car and shows it in historical pictures, some of which have never been published before, and in the sales literature of the time.

Triumph TR 2 with over 201 km/h
In 1953, Standard Motor Co. Ltd. invited a dozen journalists to Belgium for speed tests. The measurements were carried out on a two-lane concrete road in Belgium, which was closed for this purpose. The aim of the measurements was to demonstrate the capabilities of the new Triumph T.R.2. sports car.
Many memories of a fortnight's drive through Germany in a 'Triumph TR 2' remain vivid: the deep, powerful roar when the two-liter engine exceeds 2000 rpm; the astonished faces in the rear-view mirror when driving through towns; the pressure on the back when the accelerator pedal is depressed - even at 130 km/h; and a speed on the autobahn that very few other cars can achieve. This is a car that delights the heart and satisfies the sense of self! A car in which two people can travel quickly and safely. The Hobby report from 1955 is one of the first published driving experiences in German.
In 1952, Triumph presented a new sports car, which was a miscarriage at the first attempt. But the company was not deterred, continued to develop and presented the TR2 in 1953 and the TR3 two years later, creating a first-class sales success. To this day, the TR2/3 models are popular English roadsters with a reputation for robustness. This report portrays a Triumph TR3 from 1953 and tells the adventurous story of the TR3, of which over 85,000 were built, illustrated with almost 90 historical and current pictures and four original brochures.
In 1959, the range of sports cars on offer was still quite limited. The magazine 'hobby' counted around 30 models and the comparison fitted onto just a few magazine pages. The author Werner Oswald saw the reason for the comparatively small number of models on offer in the transition to self-supporting bodies and the need for rationalization. Italian design and English technology - this combination has appeared time and again in the history of motoring. But only rarely has it been celebrated as convincingly as in the Triumph Italia 2000 GT. Around 330 Italia 2000 GTs with technology from the Triumph TR 3 were built by Vignale. The design came from Michelotti, and the result is a sought-after classic today. This report describes the history of the Italia and portrays a vehicle from 1960, supplemented by a brochure and contemporary illustrations.
As early as 1955, when the Triumph TR3 had just been launched as the successor to the TR2, the manufacturer was already thinking about its successor. The TR4 was not presented until 1961, but in between interesting prototypes, fast racing cars and some special models were produced that have almost been forgotten. This report looks back on the period from 1955 to 1961 and tells part of the development history of the Triumph TR4, illustrated with photos that have never been shown before.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint, Fiat 1500 Spider, MG A, MG A Twin Cam, Triumph TR 3, Porsche 1600 and 1600 S, as well as Sunbeam Alpine and Mercedes-Benz 190 SL were contrasted and compared. And the winner? Read for yourself! Let's just say that although the most expensive car was almost twice as expensive as the cheapest, the best sports car scored just under 3% better than the worst. After the Second World War, the British automotive industry was regarded as rather unimaginative and technologically backward, at least as far as utility cars for the middle class were concerned. By the end of the 1950s, however, this image was quickly shed, and not only the Mini but also the Triumph Herald contributed to this. The practical and cultivated car could be produced in different versions with few adaptations thanks to its shell construction and impressed with balanced handling, well thought-out safety features and an almost unbelievable turning circle. There was actually no urgent reason to replace the Triumph TR 3. Nevertheless, the British worked intensively with the Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti to modernize the roadster. The result was the TR 4, an all-round successful vehicle that sold a good 68,000 units and still makes the hearts of classic car fans beat faster today. The TR series had already been offering rustic roadster driving fun for almost a decade when the TR4 appeared in 1961. In comparison to its predecessor, the swiftly curved TR3A, the sports car designed by Michelotti was much more angular and practical. Despite its more modern look, however, the TR4 could not deny its roots, and the Brit liked to dance on uneven surfaces. Was it forgiven for its character flaws in the test at the time? In 1963, the Triumph Spitfire was an affordable sports car that offered a lot of sport for the money. The conclusion of the test in the specialist magazine "hobby": not a run-of-the-mill car, but a real sports instrument for drivers who are not afraid of harshness or the problems that the Spitfire imposes on the driver in its waywardness. The Triumph Spitfire was another showcase of the paragon of British automotive engineering - the affordable sports car. Large-scale production technology made it inexpensive, a low power-to-weight ratio ensured that it was lively, and a Michelotti dress provided the beauty. The NSU Wankel Spider was intended to convince customers of the Wankel engine, and the Triumph Spitfire MK II was the typical small English roadster. The magazine "hobby" put the two sports cars through the wringer and tested them on Grand Prix circuits, at an airfield, on hill climbs and on extended mountain pass tours. Although it was launched two years late, the Triumph Stag was plagued by a number of teething troubles and horrendous quality defects when it made its debut. While Canley was too busy trying to salvage the battered reputation of the eight-cylinder convertible, the long-planned coupé version fell by the wayside. A station wagon with a powerful six-cylinder engine and independent suspension all round? This was by no means the norm at the end of the sixties and was not often seen on the road. The Triumph Stag was aimed at lovers of well-maintained, moderately sporty convertibles and made its mark with its V8 engine, Targa bar and overdrive. From 1973, the Triumph Dolomite Sprint was the first mass-produced car with a four-valve engine. As the sporty top model of the Dolomite series, it was built until 1980 and was also successful on the export market. The Austrian magazine Auto Revue tested a model equipped with overdrive and, apart from a few quality defects, was thoroughly impressed by the fast English car. They were already exotic in our latitudes in 1974: the Saab 99 L, the Triumph Dolomite Sprint and the Chrysler 2 Liter. With completely different approaches and characteristics, they were looking for buyers and wanted to be an alternative to market-dominating Opel or Ford models. Triumph was able to sell around 100,000 TR 6 sports cars. Even more were sold of the TR 7, although this car was under a bad star at the beginning: strikes and shoddy work delayed production; when the various teething troubles had been cured, the value of the dollar - and thus the American market - collapsed. The Triumph Dolomite was presented 50 years ago at the beginning of 1972; the Sprint version followed a year later - at the time the only four-door model with a 16-valve four-cylinder engine built in large series. Shortly after his appearance at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show, his career came to an end after 18 years. Little had changed during this time. The Triumph Spitfire had simply become a little sportier, more economical and prettier, but remained cheap and simple enough. That's how its owners loved it back then and they still do today. A "silver lemon" could do just as little about it as the bow-top convertibles of the seventies. When the Triumph TR 7 appeared in 1975, it was hardly reminiscent of its predecessors TR 2 to TR 6, because as a self-supporting, wedge-shaped coupé, it was clearly different from its roadster predecessors. But it made its way and eventually became the most successful TR model ever. At the end of the 1970s, British Leyland announced a fully convertible based on the Triumph TR7 in difficult times. The joy was dampened by the simultaneous demise of the MGB and Triumph Spitfire, but the open TR7 did its job better than expected, even if not all wishes were fulfilled.
