The Morgan Three Wheeler was built between 1910 and 1953 in various versions with one, two or even four seats, only the three-wheeled layout with the single wheel at the rear remained constant, engines and body shapes changed. With independent suspension (from the beginning) and front brakes (from 1923), the robust Three Wheeler was a feared competitor on racetracks and a cost-effective alternative to many a sports car on the road. When you imagine a Morgan, you typically think of curved fenders, a rounded radiator grille, a long hood and a short rear end - in short, a modernized pre-war sports car. Thanks to its rigidity, the Morgan chassis was also well suited to the construction of special bodies. A particularly beautiful "special" from the United States is presented here. It is a Morgan Plus 4 from 1956 with a custom-made plastic body in the style of the Ferrari Mondial by Scaglietti. Morgan Plus 4 - Half Eight
While in the mid-fifties the last English manufacturers were also saying goodbye to the design language of the thirties, Morgan stubbornly stuck to free-standing mudguards and running boards. However, the drive was allowed to move with the times. This was a good thing, as it resulted in one of the most impressive sports cars of the post-war era. This article summarizes the evolution of the Plus 4 and describes the driving impressions from the cockpit of a 1956 model with a Triumph engine.
Around 18,000 four-cylinder Morgan sports cars have been built to date, but one stands out. In 1962, a Morgan +4 won the two-liter class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This car, which was driven to class victory by Chris Lawrence, will be auctioned on November 4, 2011. This report summarizes its history.
Even before the manufacturer itself, the Swiss importer Wehrlin built a coupé version of the classic Morgan and presented it to the astonished public at the 1962 Geneva Motor Show. Even Peter Morgan was surprised and not at all happy about the resourceful Swiss company's initiative. He forced Wehrlin to destroy the 2+2 coupé and use it as a spare parts store. However, the individual parts are still available and a restoration of this rare contemporary witness is planned.
Morgan built the Plus 8 with the Rover V8 engine from 1968 to 2004, making it the most successful product in the company's history. The powerful engine, together with the tight and light pre-war bodywork, ensured driving performance that is still impressive today and, together with the attractive exterior, ensured a large fan base. This report portrays a Morgan Plus 8 from 1973 and tells the story of the V8 model in detail, supplemented by archive material and the original sales brochure as well as other documents.
While other manufacturers were concerned with such things as chassis, aerodynamics and space utilization, progress at Morgan consisted mainly of increasing engine performance. After the Triumph four-cylinder had had its day, twice as many combustion chambers were stuffed into the antiquated wooden chassis. As a result, the Morgan Plus 8 achieved driving performance that was not in the least apparent from its aged exterior. This historical test report is dedicated to the newly invigorated Methuselah.
