In the 1980s, Subaru was primarily known for pragmatic everyday cars with all-wheel drive. With the SVX, the Japanese manufacturer took a big leap forward in the 1990s to compete directly with Porsche and the like. With futuristic styling, all-wheel drive and a water-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine, it clearly set itself apart from the competition. Although Subaru built its first (small) car at the end of the 1950s with the 360 model, the brand was not really recognized in this country until the late 1970s with the Subaru Leone and the even better-known 1800 4WD. The station wagon introduced with the help of Bernhard Russi already had the ingredients that made Subaru a successful manufacturer worldwide, namely a boxer engine and all-wheel drive. As early as the mid-1980s, Subaru launched the (Alcyone) XT, a sports car that really stood out with its wedge-shaped body. Almost 100,000 units were sold worldwide by 1991, some of which were equipped with six-cylinder engines.
