The Fiat 850 Spider was one of the most successful sports cars of its era. It was built by Bertone and this offered opportunities for special versions. One of these was the Bertone Racer Berlinetta, basically a Spider with a fixed tin roof. This was particularly popular in the USA, but also made many friends in Germany. However, only a few have survived. This driving report describes the development history of the Bertone Racer and shows it in historical and current pictures.

When Fiat presented the Spider version of the 850 Berlina at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1965 (together with the Coupé ) , Bertone must have been in seventh heaven. After all, this inexpensive convertible, which had been created on his premises, offered him excellent capacity utilization figures for his factories in the medium term. The 850 Spider was extremely well received, but that didn't mean that Bertone left it at that. Bertone engineers were already preparing a "Convertibile Lusso" for the Paris Motor Show in September 1965, a luxurious cabriolet version with a more refined interior and chrome wheel arches.
