Summary
In 1995, the Fiat Barchetta appeared as an MX-5 competitor and an affordable entry-level convertible. Almost 30 years later, the Fiat is already a classic, which makes a comparison with its actual ancestor, the Fiat 850 Spider, all the more interesting. This driving report takes a closer look at the differences between the two Fiat models and shows both in many pictures.
This article contains the following chapters
- Factor two of the Fiat 850 Spider?
- Getting started then and now
- Many similarities
- Which one is rarer?

This is done quickly (and without electric assistance), but you have to get out of the car because the roof needs to be stowed under a sturdy flap. Back in the car, the engine is started conventionally with the ignition key and the melodious-sounding four-cylinder engine in the front starts up. The sporty note is pleasing, the engine is not loud. Five forward gears need to be sorted, which is no problem as the shift levels are fairly well defined. 131 hp may not sound like much today, but it is easily enough for sporty open-top driving.
