This will be the last time that RM/Sotheby's will accompany the Amelia Island Concours with an auction. For Saturday, March 4, 2023, the specialists at RM have put together their most diverse and probably also most valuable offering to date, which includes almost everything that is currently in demand, from pre-war veterans to modern hypercars.
The auction will take place in Fernandina Beach, Florida.
In addition to some automobilia, 88 automobiles with an average value of around one million USD will go under the hammer. 42 percent of these are offered without a reserve price.
Ferrari at the top
33 brands will be on offer at RM on March 4, 2023, with the most vehicles bearing the Ferrari name: 12 cars in total, not including the two Dino models. Mercedes-Benz is represented with nine, Porsche with eight and Packard as an American brand with seven cars. All other brands have a maximum of four cars.
Ferrari not only has the largest contingent, three Ferraris are also among the five most valuable cars in the auction. The most expensive is the Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider from 1959, estimated at USD 9 to 11 million.
A Ferrari F50 from 1995 was valued at USD 4.75 to 6 million, and a 288 GTO from 1985 at USD 4 to 4.5 million.
A Pagani Zonda R from 2010 and a Duesenberg Model J from 1931 slipped between the three Ferraris in the top 5, illustrating the breadth of the offer.
Large pre-war share
With 21 cars, or almost a quarter of the cars on offer, there is an above-average number of cars built before 1939. The oldest car is a 1909 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Roi des Belges.
One of the most spectacular early cars is certainly the super-rare Tatra T77 from 1934, which went under the hammer without an estimated value after investments of over USD 1 million.
The pre-war cars are not significantly cheaper on average than the rest of the range.
Many super classics
Only a few of the cars to be sold in Fernandina Beach are not super classics, if you exclude the very young cars.
Among others, two early Maserati A6GCS from 1950 and 1953 with Fantuzzi bodies are looking for new owners, as well as an Indy and a Bora.
In addition to the cars already mentioned, the Ferrari range also includes a 275 GTS, a 330 GTC, a Daytona, a 365 GTC/4, a 250 GTE and an F40. Also of interest is the Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina from 1976 in an attractive color scheme, which is unusually expensive at USD 225,000 to 275,000.
Two Dino, one as a two-liter coupé and one as a 2.4-liter Targa, complete the Ferrari selection.
Two Mercedes-Benz 300 SL from 1958 and 1963, two 300 S, a 540 K from 1937, a 190 SL, a 250 SL and a 280 SE represent the Mercedes star.
There are several 911s from Porsche, some with turbochargers, but no Carrera RS.
The three Aston Martin cars, a DB4 from 1962, a DB5 from 1965 and a DB5 Vantage Convertible from the same year, are expected to fetch seven-figure prices.
The BMW M1 from 1980 in white, which is listed in the catalog for USD 550,000 to 750,000, should not be underestimated.
And then there are two Allards, an Austin-Healey 100 M from 1956, a Shelby Cobra 289 from 1964 or a Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato from 1959, and many more.
Valuable youngsters
The list of cars built after 2000 comprises 12 vehicles. The starting point is a Porsche Boxster S from 2000, which is expected to find a new owner for a manageable USD 20,000 to 25,000.
On average, however, even the youngsters cost at least one million USD, which is mainly due to the particularly valuable Bugatti Chiron, Ford GT and Pagani Zonda R.
If you don't want to invest millions right away, you might find a car that is also compatible with five-figure bank balances in the Autobianchi Bianchina Special Cabriolet from 1960 or a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III from 1963.
