It's a surprisingly eclectic menu that RM/Sotheby's is serving up in its traditional autumn auction at the Battersea Evolution center in London on September 5, 2018.
A total of 96 vehicles worth £33 million (EUR 37 million, CHF 41.7 million) will go under the hammer, so around £344,000 (EUR 367,000, CHF 416,000) per lot is expected.
Porsche, Ferrari and 31 other brands
Just over a quarter of the cars on offer are from Porsche (13) and Ferrari (12, plus 1 Dino). The remainder is made up of 31 brands, including Aston Martin and Maserati with 8 cars each, Mercedes-Benz with 7 and Jaguar/Lamborghini with 6 cars each. Sbarro, Zagato, Talbot and De Tomaso, among others, each have just one car.
The average age of the vehicles is 42, six cars are from the pre-war period, and the 1960s and 1970s are particularly well represented.
Small cars
The owner of the "Weird and Wonderful Collection" car collection, which goes under the hammer in London largely without a reserve price, must certainly have very special taste.
This group includes small cars such as a replica Peel Trident, a Fiat 500 Jolly, a Zagato Zele 1000 electric car and an Autobianchi Panoramica from 1968. The Peel P50 still listed in the catalog appears to have been withdrawn.
A Cadillac Series 67 from 1942, a Delage CO from 1920 or a Lamborghini Murciélago represent almost the other extreme. Truly a versatile collector!
Super exotics
A number of cars will also be on sale again in London, which should be of interest to the automotive gourmet who is after very special and rare vehicles.
One example is the De Tomaso Guará Spyder from 1998, which is offered for £ 150,000 to £ 200,000.
The fact that a 1992 Maserati Barchetta, which in principle formed the technical basis for the Guará, is also going under the hammer at the same time is certainly a special coincidence.
The fact that two Maserati cars, coachbuilt by Pietro Frua, are being offered at the same time is also not an everyday occurrence. While the 3500 GTi from 1962 is probably not one of Frua's most beautiful designs, he was certainly at his best with the Quattroporte II from 1974.
The 2008 Sbarro Espera Genesis, which is visually reminiscent of the KTM X-Bow but is powered by a V6, can certainly be counted among the super exotic cars.
The design comes from Franco Sbarro's design school, and the car was on display at the Geneva Motor Show at the time. It does not yet appear to be road-legal, which could be a considerable hurdle depending on the country.
Super classic
Those who opt for one of the many "blue chip" classics that RM/Sotheby's wants to sell in London are on the safe side.
There are four Aston Martins from the DB lines to choose from, the most valuable of which is certainly the 1961 DB4 GT, which has been valued at £3 to £3.4 million.
The Ferrari 275 GTB with aluminum bodywork from 1966 is likely to land in a similar price region, with an estimate of £ 2 to 2.2 million.
Two 365 GTB/4 Daytona from 1970 and 1971 are looking for new owners for between £ 490,000 and £ 625,000, while a Ferrari Enzo is expected to fetch between £ 1.85 and £ 2 million.
The Jaguar E-Type is not missing in London either, with three Series 1 road-going examples listed at £125,000 to £270,000 and a Lightweight Recreation at £350,000 to £450,000.
For Maserati enthusiasts, the three Ghibli, two Coupés and one Spyder should be of interest. While the closed variants are expected to be worth £200,000 to £260,000, the convertible is expected to fetch £850,000 to £1.15 million.
A gullwing Mercedes-Benz 300 SL from 1955 is not missing either, with an estimate of £ 950,000 to 1.25 million.
With the exception of a 356 A Speedster from 1957 (£ 280,000 to 330,000), Porsche is mainly represented by newer cars that have at best reached youngtimer age. Almost new is a 918 Spyder from 2015, which was estimated at an odd £ 1.11 to 1.2 million.
The Porsche 924 Carrera GTS Clubsport from 1982, one of only 15 examples with 280 hp and a kerb weight of just 1045 kg, should be of great interest to collectors. However, £220,000 to £260,000 is also a hefty price for a four-cylinder engine; after all, for around twice that amount, you could have 16 cylinders in V-form, packed into a 1931 Cadillac V-16 Sport Phaeton with Fleetwood bodywork.
Yes, those who have the choice are spoiled for choice. There is certainly no shortage of special cars at RM/Sotheby's in London.
Further information and pictures of the individual cars can also be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
