The Brescia Automobile Club, in collaboration with the municipality of Brescia and Lombardy, is campaigning for the historic Mille Miglia to be recognized as an intangible world heritage site.
The original road race took place between 1927 and 1957 and has been commemorated for several decades with a classic car rally. Every year, hundreds of teams enter their historic racing cars, bringing a rich heritage to the starting line.
The event has been defined in a famous phrase by Enzo Ferrari as "the only driving museum in the world", and this describes well the value of the historic cars that compete each year, followed by thousands of motor enthusiasts.
The historic cars that drive through the stages are a testament to the ingenuity of man in the search for progress and the constant overcoming of boundaries. At the same time, they are a reminder of the courage and skill with which the first drivers dared to reach previously unthinkable speeds. Today, Italian motorsport is a wealth that, through historic racing and other events, finds a way to pass on this heritage to future generations and keep alive a full awareness of past values.
The nomination process involves the entire historic motorsport scene: Fans, athletes, car manufacturers, museums and cultural institutions; everyone will be able to support and contribute to the nomination.
It will be interesting to see if the attempt succeeds.
