On March 7, 2014, Gooding & Company invites you to the traditional auction in Amelia Island. 88 vehicles are on the lot list, all of which are automobiles with the exception of one motorcycle.
The total value of the vehicles on offer is over USD 40 million, with the average value of the cars expected to be around USD 390,000 (EUR 284,000, CHF 346,000).
After all, 61% of the lots will be auctioned without a reserve price, so the chances of surprises are good.
Rare Ferrari 250 GT Europe
Only rarely do unrestored sports cars from the first decades of Enzo Ferrari's career with low mileage and extensive history come onto the market. 409 GT, a Ferrari 250 GT Europa from 1955, has just 14,200 km on the clock and has been pampered and cared for throughout its life. No wonder Gooding has not published an estimated price for this car, which incidentally also spent several years in Switzerland after a long life in Italy.
Porsche racing car worth millions
The Porsche 907 from 1968 in long-tail configuration is awaited with great interest. Only seven long 907s were built for the 1968 season, and the car on offer has chassis number 005. Drivers of the car, which also won the 24 Hours of Daytona, included Vic Elford, Hans Hermann, Jo Siffert, Rolf Stommelen and Jochen Neerpasch.
Chassis 507 has been completely restored and has the correct eight-cylinder engine in front of the center axle. In 2011, it was voted the most historically important racing car at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. It is now set to find a new owner for USD 3.5 to 5 million (EUR 2.6 to 3.7 million, CHF 3.1 to 4.5 million).
Chassis 718-023, a Porsche RSK 718 from 1959 that completed its racing career in the United States, is said to be hardly less valuable.
And the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 from 1973 in "Lightwight" configuration is also said to break the USD million mark, a proud price given the fact that the early history of the car is unknown.
Three times Dino
Gooding is offering three (Ferrari) Dino six-cylinder cars. The most expensive was the rare 206 GT, which is estimated to be worth USD 475,000 to 550,000 (Euro 367,000 to 402,000, CHF 423,000 to 490,000) as lot 70. The two 246 GT and GTS (lots 5 and 45) were unanimously valued at USD 325,000 to 375,000 (Euro 237,000 to 274,000, CHF 289,000 to 334,000). The color of the open 246 GTS from 1974 is striking - it is purple!
Cheap BMW rarities?
18 BMW brand cars are being offered by Gooding in Amelia Island, including the super classic BMW 507 Series II from 1958, which is expected to sell for an immodest USD 1.5 to 1.8 million (Euro 1.1 to 1.3 million, CHF 1.3 to 1.6 million).
The BMW M1, which Gooding wants to sell to a new owner for USD 325,000 to 375,000 (Euro 237,000 to 274,000, CHF 289,000 to 334,000), is also still on the rise.
The BMW 3.0 CSL from 1972 and the BMW 503 Coupé from 1957 are also expected to go under the hammer in the six-figure range.
All other BMWs were estimated at five figures, the 1600 GT, for example, at USD 55,000 to 75,000 (Euro 40,150 to 54,750, CHF 48,950 to 66,750).
The BMW 3200 CS from 1964 is really cheap and perhaps a bargain that we will be tearing our hair out over in five or ten years' time. After all, there are fewer examples of this elegant coupé with an eight-cylinder engine than of the Mercedes 300 SL or many other super classics, and yet it is listed on the lot at a moderate estimate of USD 65,000 to 85,000 (EUR 47,450 to 62,050, CHF 57,850 to 75,650).
For large purses
The prices announced by Gooding for Amelia Island show a healthy self-confidence. The newer of the two Mercedes Benz 300 SLs, for example, was estimated at USD 1.6 to 2 million.
And the red Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America from 1956 is expected to fetch USD 1.25 to 1.55 million. An Iso Grifo II from 1973 is expected to fetch USD 300,000 to 400,000 and the more expensive of the two Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona from 1972 has been estimated at USD 750,000 to 825,000.
So a lot of money is needed to become the owner of a classic car on Amelia Island. But there are other ways, a BMW 700 Coupé from 1960 can perhaps be purchased for USD 12,000, an Austin Mini Cooper S from 1964 for USD 25,000.
