After a year's forced break, the eyes of classic car collectors, investors and interested parties are focused on the major auctions surrounding the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance. Gooding & Co will be auctioning 128 large automobiles and four children's cars on Friday and Saturday (August 13 and 14, 2021). The total value is over USD 143 million, so over USD 1.1 million is expected per car.
On average, the cars are almost 60 years old. They come from 47 brands. As usual, Ferrari (23 cars, including two Dino) and Porsche (13) dominate the range, with all other manufacturers represented in single figures at most, and some less well-known brands with just one car.
Worth millions
38 classic cars are expected to find new owners for more than one million USD. They alone represent around half of the expected sales on August 13/14, 2021.
Surprisingly, there is hardly any brand dominance among the most expensive cars.
In addition to the expected Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Maserati, Bugatti, Aston Martin, Bentley, Duesenberg, Siata, Chevrolet, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, Lola, Shelby and Stutz are also among the very expensive offers.
A total of 45 percent of the vehicles will be auctioned without a reserve price. In some cases, it is therefore likely that the estimated prices, which are certainly self-confident overall, will be undercut.
The McLaren F1 is the most expensive
However, the most expensive car will probably be the already much-discussed McLaren F1 from 1995, which will go under the hammer as lot 029 with the same chassis number.
The car, which appears to be in mint condition with extensive accessories, is expected to cost at least USD 15 million, although Gooding & Co does not provide an exact estimate.
Restoration objects at high prices
Half a dozen restoration objects, which will also go under the hammer in Pebble Beach, look almost like the opposite.
There is, for example, a Jaguar E-Type from 1965 with just over 8,000 miles on the clock, which has not been driven since 1972 and is now waiting for an extensive refresh. With an estimated value of USD 250,000 to 350,000, this restoration base is expected to cost more than most other E-Types that have already been completely renewed.
Also of interest is a triplet of Aston Martin DB2s in various versions, including a 1953 Drophead Coupé, which are looking for new owners and enthusiastic restorers for prices between USD 120,000 and 250,000. The cars were recently found in a garage in Wisconsin, where they were partially dismantled and awaiting restoration.
A Bugatti Type 57 Galibier from 1934, which has a Swiss history and was once in the Schlumpf collection, is fitted with a Vanvooren body. It is now in need of a complete restoration. USD 200,000 to 225,000 is to be spent on the basis for this.
The 1956 Maserati A6G/54 with Frua bodywork from the famous Baillon collection, which was auctioned in Paris in the mid-teens, may look like a restoration object. However, the extensive patina should of course be preserved, as this coupé will never be more original. The previous owner has kept it that way and would now like to have USD 2.5 to 3.25 million for this fine piece.
The silver surfer collection
Neil Peart was not only the drummer of the rock band Rush, he was also an enthusiastic classic car collector with a penchant for silver-colored cars. He lived in California and felt that the color silver simply went best with the blue ocean he often drove along.
He owned a whole series of super classics, including an Aston Martin DB4, a Lamborghini Miura P400 S, a Maserati Ghibli, a Shelby Cobra 289, a Jaguar E-Type, a Maserati Mistral Spider and a split-window Corvette C2, which are now going under the hammer after his death from cancer.
Racing car with US history
The Maserati 200 SI is certainly one of the most beautiful racing cars of all time.
Chassis 2423 was sold new with Fantuzzi aluminum body by Carroll Shelby to Gaylord Jackson. Now the car is to change hands for USD 4 to 4.5 million.
USD 2.5 to 3 million is expected for the most successful Kremer Porsche 935 K3 from 1980 (chassis 27). The car raced for Ted Field's Interscope Racing Team in 1981/1982.
Jackie Stewart himself drove the 1966 Lola T-90 as a rookie in the Indianapolis 500 miles. Although he only finished sixth, he was still Rookie of the Year. And in Fuji, he followed this up with a victory and pole position. Now USD 1 to 1.4 million has been set for the Lola.
The March 86C from 1986 could perhaps become the most expensive car of this brand. USD 1.5 to 2 million is expected for the winner of the 1986 Indianapolis 500 miles.
The 1966 Ford GT40 Alan Mann Lightweight was driven by Whitmore and Gardner at Sebring and took part in the Le Mans tests. Only two of these lightweight mid-engine sports cars were built, the car on offer is coming to the market for the first time in 30 years, for USD 7 to 9 million.
Gooding is putting several "Midget Racers" from different brands under the hammer. The vehicles are to be sold to enthusiastic racing drivers for five-figure sums.
The Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione from 1959, chassis number 1235 GT, which is looking for a new owner for USD 10 to 12 million, has no American racing history. The elegant racing car is one of the few California Spiders that were delivered for use in racing. With its Italian racing history and authentic paintwork, this Spider is likely to fetch a record sum.
Away from the usual
Gooding also has a lot to offer that is considered rather exotic at top auctions.
For example, there is a Citroën 2CV from 1991 for sale, which was estimated at USD 10,000 to 15,000.
In addition to two 300 SLs, there is also a well-behaved Mercedes-Benz 180 Ponton from 1958 for sale, with an estimate of USD 15,000 to 20,000. Those who prefer something larger and more luxurious can opt for the Mercedes-Benz 300 SD from 1980 for USD 30,000 to 50,000.
A 1957 Nash Metropolitan is expected to fetch USD 25,000 to 35,000, and a 1957 Fiat 1200 TV Trasformabile USD 60,000 to 80,000.
Of course, all these cars are on offer without a reserve price, so perhaps these rarities are also available at a lower price from a US perspective.
The tuning excesses of the 1980s are also likely to have an exotic effect on most classic car fans. In Pebble Beach, Gooding has two Ferrari-based Koenig Specials and a Porsche Turbo-based Rinspeed 969 on offer at prices ranging from USD 100,000 to 300,000.
Notable pre-war share
With 27 cars, pre-war cars (up to 1942) make up around a fifth of the vehicles at Gooding. Two very early Rolls-Royce 40/50 Silver Ghosts from 1910 and 1911 are the oldest cars.
Some American pre-war classics from Cadillac, Duesenberg, Hudson, Marmon, Packard, Pierce Arrow and Stutz are included, as well as cars from Peugeot and Bugatti.
And because the name Bugatti has just been mentioned, it is worth mentioning the magnificent Type 35B from 1929, which was estimated at an immodest USD 3.5 to 4.5 million.
Many super classics, relatively few neoclassics and youngtimers
Of course, there is no shortage of super classics at Gooding. Whether Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider or 6C 2500 SS Villa d'Este, Aston Martin DB4 GT or DB5, Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback or BMW 507 Series II, you could spell out the entire alphabet and list a super classic for almost every letter.
There are also two vehicles of many types, such as the Aston Martin DB5, the Ferrari 275 GTB or 365 GTB(4 Daytona, the Jaguar E-Type Series 1, the Lamborghini Miura, etc.
The best way to find out is to take a look at the sortable lot list below. Then you will also discover the comparatively few youngtimers and neoclassics, which of course should not be missing.
For more information and pictures, you can of course also visit the Gooding & Co website.
