Following the successful "Lifetime Sale" auction in 2020, Gooding & Co is physically returning to Europe to auction 38 cars (and two Ferrari engines) at the Concours d'Elégance at Hampton Court Palace on September 3, 2022.
The cars were valued at just over £33.2 million in total, giving a value of £875,263 per car. On average, the cars are almost 69 years old, so the pre-war proportion is considerable. A good third of the lots will go under the hammer without a reserve price.
Bentley at the top
Bentley leads the list of brands with seven cars, with three cars each from Ferrari, Jaguar and Porsche coming to the auction, as well as a Dino.
With a few exceptions, all of the other 18 brands are represented by a car.
There is no shortage of interesting cars, and there is a special story to be told about almost every car.
Ferrari most expensive
The most valuable car in the auction is a Ferrari 250 GT SWB from 1960 with a contemporary racing history that includes Le Mans. The estimated value is £ 6 to 7 million.
The Ferrari is followed by two pre-war vehicles, a Bugatti Type 55 Cabriolet from 1932 and a Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Tourer from 1912, one of the oldest cars in the auction.
The Bugatti is expected to fetch £ 3.75 to 4.75 million, the Rolls £ 2.5 to 3 million.
Two Porsches take 4th and 5th place. The 550 Spyder from 1956 deserves a few special words, because it is a rather peculiar specimen, as the car was re-bodied in the style of the 718 RSK. The history is not one hundred percent clear, but Heinz Schiller is thought to be the first owner.
The car has not changed hands for 40 years and is now said to cost £ 1.25 to 1.75 million as a "garage find".
The Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 2.8 from 1973 is likely to be somewhat more expensive. An estimate of £ 1.75 to 2.25 million has been set for the car with Le Mans participation.
Alfa Romeo Giulia Tubolare Zagato
Only 112 Tubolare Zagatos were built between 1963 and 1967. Accordingly, they rarely come under the hammer in public.
The 1965 example Gooding has to offer has an Italian racing history and is said to be excellently documented and authentic.
Estimated at £ 1 to 1.2 million.
The 1965 Sprint GTA, which is expected to fetch £ 200,000 to £ 300,000, is a little cheaper.
Exotics
The Riley MPH Sports Two Seater from 1934 is one of 16 examples built, but its history seems to have a few holes in it.
This also explains the comparatively low estimate of £ 375,000 to £ 475,000.
The Frazer Nash Le Mans Replica from 1952 is set to be around twice as expensive. As one of 34 factory examples built and with a racing history, £700,000 to £900,000 has been set here.
The Lancia Epsilon from 1912, one of the first models from the car manufacturer founded in 1906, is also a real rarity. 357 examples of the Epsilon were produced, and the car on offer features a body by J.M. Quinby & Co. The car was valued at £125,000 to £175,000 and is being offered without a reserve price.
Super classics too
Of course, there are also some super classics on offer at Gooding.
Examples include a Ferrari 275 GTS from 1965 (£ 1.05 to 1.25 million), a Jaguar SS100 3 1/2 Litre from 1939 (£ 325,000 to 425'000), a 1967 Maserati Mistral Coupé (£70,000 to £100,000) and a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing (£1.1 to £1.3 million).
There are also a few cheaper cars for sale, such as a 1947 MG TC (£ 25,000 to 35,000) or a 1932 Austin Seven Mulliner Military (USD 20,000 to 40,000).
The Citroën 2 CV "Dolly" from 1987 should also remain affordable at £ 10,000 to £ 20,000.
It will be interesting to see how the second physical Gooding auction in London will go.
Further information on the cars and many photos can be found on the Gooding & Co. website.
