40 years ago, Mercedes-Benz began a success story that continues to this day: In November 1984, the brand presented the 124 model series saloons. Just one month later, the completely redesigned generation of the upper mid-size class was launched on the market. Customers and experts alike are impressed by the timeless, modern design and innovative technology.
From 1993, the 124 model series bears the name E-Class for the first time. After 13 years of production and more than 2.2 million units, series production of the 124 model series ended in 1997. The saloons, T-models, coupés and cabriolets quickly established themselves as popular youngtimers. Rare variants achieved collector's item status years ago.
Versatile
Today, every vehicle in the 124 model series invites philosophizing: Is it more of a beloved contemporary witness of the exciting 1980s and a sign of the dawn of the product offensive of the 1990s? Or is it more of a timeless classic that will always remain young?
There is no question that this generation of the upper mid-range from Mercedes-Benz has a special charisma. This is reflected in the large fan base of the model series and its important role in the classic car scene.
Aesthetic and practical
With their timeless aesthetics and high everyday utility, these vehicles offer a reliable entry into the world of classic cars. Mercedes-Benz Classic is helping to carry this success story into the future. In particular, the worldwide supply of spare and wear parts through Mercedes-Benz Classic Genuine Parts and the support of the fan community through the brand clubs recognized by the company stand for this.
Versatile classic
The 124 model series not only impresses with its diversity in terms of body variants, but also with its wide range of models. The engines range from the four-cylinder in the entry-level Mercedes-Benz 200 and 200 D to high-performance saloons with V8 engines. The iconic 500 E was presented as the top model at the Paris Motor Show in 1990. Its eight-cylinder engine delivers 240 kW (326 hp) and its performance makes the saloon a high-performance sports car.
The E 60 AMG followed in 1993. It is one of the first AMG vehicles to be included in the official Mercedes-Benz product range. In general, 1993 is a year in which the brand sets an important course for the future. The nomenclature changes and the upper mid-range vehicles are now called the "E-Class". To this day, the name is a symbol for the brand's upper mid-range and luxury class business vehicles.
The 124 model series set technical standards in its segment 40 years ago: its hallmarks included high-strength sheet steel and weight-reducing materials. Outstanding results in demanding offset crashes demonstrate the highest level of passive safety. The optimized aerodynamics lead to best values within the Mercedes-Benz passenger car segment. The pioneering systems that premiered in the 124 model series included the panoramic windscreen wiper with the world's largest wiper array at the time and the first generation of 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
