Last year, the Bonhams auction could not take place at the Grand Palais in Paris, but in 2022, the auction organizers from the UK are sticking to the date and the stately property where great automobiles were once presented to the public at the Salon. While the Rétromobile classic car show has moved to March, 111 cars, 17 motorcycles and a number of automobilia will go under the hammer near the Eiffel Tower on February 3, 2022, as in other years.
The 111 cars were valued at a total of EUR 27.3 million. They are on average 56 years old. More than half, 54% to be exact, of the lots will be auctioned without a reserve price.
Aston Martin, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz
Around a third of the cars on offer are from three brands. Aston Martin accounted for 17 vehicles, Porsche for 11 and Mercedes-Benz for 10. Jaguar follows with six and Bugatti is the first French brand with five cars.
Overall, the proportion of French brands is around 15 percent.
In addition to the well-known manufacturers, companies that have long since ceased production are also represented, such as Delage, Delehaye, Humber, Pipe and Talbot-Lago.
Extensive pre-war range
As usual at Bonhams in Paris, the selection of pre-war vehicles is extensive.
As many as 28 cars date from the period up to 1939.
Among them are no less than four Hispano-Suiza, four Bugatti, but also an Invicta 4 1/2 Litre S-Type from 1931, for which EUR 1.1 to 1.4 million is expected.
A Mercedes-Benz 380K Cabriolet A from 1934 is expected to be similarly expensive, with an estimate of EUR 1.2 to 1.6 million.
Valuable young cars
Just as well represented as the pre-war fraction are the young cars from 1992 onwards. The 28 youngtimers and neoclassics also include two of the most expensive cars in the auction, a Bugatti EB110 GT from 1996 (EUR 1.1 to 1.3 million) and a Ferrari LaFerrari from 2014 (EUR 2 to 2.5 million).
Sports car fans will certainly want to take a closer look at the 1993 Jaguar XJ220 or the 1993 Aston Martin Viarage 6.3 Litre Shooting Brake.
The Volvo 850 with gas turbine from 1993, which is listed in the catalog for EUR 60,000 to 80,000, should be for the special taste.
Super classics from the fifties and sixties
In addition to the pre-war classics already mentioned, there is also a respectable range of super classics from the fifties and sixties to mention.
Many of the Aston Martin sports cars on offer (e.g. DB2, DB4) belong to this group, but also a Porsche 356 Carrera 2 GS from 1962 (EUR 480'000 to 540'000), a Ferrari 250 GTE from 1963 (EUR 180'000 to 240'000), a Facel Vega Facel II from 1964 (eUR 140'000 to 180'000) or a Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Series 1 from 1964 (EUR 100,000 to 130,000).
Racing cars for enthusiasts
One of the auction's showpieces is a green Porsche 904 GTS from 1964, which is being offered for EUR 1.3 to 1.5 million.
The plastic mid-engined sports car was once owned by Robert Redford is said to still have original bodywork, the first chassis and the correct suspensions. However, the engine was changed and now a six-cylinder boxer with 175 hp is working behind the crew.
A Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5 16V from 1991 with a DTM past was valued at EUR 300,000 to 400,000.
Anyone who is enthusiastic about racing cars but does not necessarily insist on originality could be happy with one of the many replicas. These include two Volvo 240 Turbo Group A from 1982, a Sauber C9 BMWM1 Group 5 from 1995, a Matra MS630 Sports Prototype from 2007, a Chevrolet Monza IMSA from 1975 and a Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC 5.0 Dakar Replica from 1978.
Exotic items
Certainly outside the usual auction offerings are an OPAC Piu Roadster from 1996, a Volkswagen XL1 from 2015 (the one-liter car, only 250 built), a Tesla Roadster from 2010 (once driven by Michael Schumacher) or a Talbot-Lago America from 1958, one of only 14 built with a BMW V8 engine (EUR 300,000 to 350,000).
More information and pictures of the individual vehicles can be found on the Bonhams website.
