Even people who don't want to buy a car at auction are recommended to visit the Bonhams auction or the "Preview" opportunities, because there is almost no better place to exhibit cars than in the Grand Palais in Paris, where the Paris Motor Show welcomed its visitors decades ago.

On February 4, 2016, Bonhams will bring 131 automobiles under the hammer alongside a number of automobilia and motorcycles. The total value of lots 301 to 433 (lots 313 and 413 are missing, as usual, because they contain the number "13") is EUR 28.8 million or CHF 31.3 million, so on average a car will change hands for EUR 220,000 or CHF 239,000. 24 vehicles, or 18%, will be auctioned without a reserve price.

Diversity and French style

The 131 cars are divided into 40 brands. At Bonhams, Ferrari is also at the top of the list, with 17 lots bearing the prancing horse from Maranello. This is followed by 14 Porsche, 9 Alfa Romeo and Jaguar, 7 Renault, 6 Citroën and Mercedes-Benz. The remainder is made up of a further 33 brands, including rarely seen names such as Adler, Clément-Bayard, Darmont and Newton-Ceirano. As many as 15% of the cars come from France, a tribute to the venue.

Ferrari as the star of the marathon

For most of the day, the Bonhams people will be swinging the hammer, first on the motorcycles and then on the cars, with a marathon auction lasting several hours.

Bonhams' most valuable car in Paris will be the Ferrari 275 GTB from 1966, which has been estimated at EUR 2.5 to 3.5 million and will surprisingly be auctioned without a limit. People obviously feel safe here.

Many valuable youngtimers

The second most expensive car after the Ferrari is a veritable classic car, the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR from 2000, which should be worth around EUR 1.8 to 2 million to a new owner.

A Ferrari F40 from 1990 will be auctioned for EUR 0.95 to 1.1 million, while the pre-production Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider from 1955 is expected to fetch around EUR 0.9 to 1.3 million. A Porsche Carrera GT from 2005 completes the top 5 in terms of estimated prices.

Three of the five most expensive cars are classics from the recent past, followed by a surprising number of modern cars such as the Ferrari 550, 575, 599 or Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.

Secret stars

Hardly on the radar of inexperienced but wealthy classic car hobbyists are some of the interesting cars offered by Bonhams.

An example of this is the Alfa Romeo Romeo 2 minibus from 1961, which is expected to cost EUR 60,000 to 90,000.

The Citroën Visa Mille Pistes Group B from 1985, which is said to cost EUR 20,000 to 30,000, is certainly special. You certainly won't find an evolutionary model built only 200 times with 145 hp in excellent condition according to Bonhams for much less.

The Barchetta based on a Fiat 1500 6C sedan from 1937, whose only flaw is that the aluminum body was only created a few years ago, is also likely to be unique. EUR 80,000 to 120,000 is certainly fair in view of the good condition according to Bonhams.

Another rarity is the Panhard CD, based on designs by Charles Deutsch and successfully entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The road-going version, chassis 258, was estimated at EUR 50,000 to 70,000, which seems reasonable for a restored and ready-to-drive example, especially as it could be entered in the Le Mans Classic.

Extensive pre-war range

Bonhams is offering as many as 25 pre-war cars.

From the almost 120-year-old De Dion-Bouton Type D from 1899 to the Bentley 4 1/2 Litre Cabriolet from 1939, there are many rarities up for auction, including an Adler 35/80 HP Phaeton from 1913, an isotta Fraschini Tip 8A Torpedo from 1926 or an Alfa Romeo 6C 2300B as a coupé from 1937.

Many classics with potential for the future

Among the wide range of cars on offer in Paris, there are always cars that can be predicted to have considerable potential to increase in value in the future.

At EUR 85,000 to 135,000, a Porsche 914/6 from 1970 is still inexpensive compared to its 911 brothers, while a Ranger Rover from 1975 is offered at an attractive price level of EUR 70,000 to 90,000.

Even the Maserati Sebring as a 3.7-liter Series II Coupé from 1967 still appears to be very reasonably priced at EUR 120,000 to 180,000 compared to a Ferrari 330 GTC or 250 GTE, with which it competed at the time, especially when you consider the low production numbers.

The same applies to the Iso Rivolta IR 300 from 1967, which is on the lot list for EUR 85,000 to 125,000.
