Unlike in the past, the Concours Chantilly Arts & Elégance has only been held every two years since 2017; 2018 was canceled. The aim is to alternate the event with the Le Mans Classic.
On June 30, 2019, elegant and sporty cars gathered near Paris for the fifth time to select the most elegant and best-preserved among them in Chantilly.
Plenty of space and pleasant weather
The 19th century Château de Chantilly and its spacious grounds are a more than suitable setting for a Concours. And if the weather cooperates and it's not too hot, then the conditions are perfect.
Only about 15 minutes of rain during the afternoon limited the joy somewhat.
Interesting mix of sports and racing cars
As you would expect from Peter Auto, the Concours tableau consisted of a mixture of road cars and racing cars. Some classes were completely dedicated to racing, such as the McLaren cars or the endurance GT cars from the 1990s.
Other classes mixed racing and more luxurious vehicles, such as the Bentley classes.
The class with the three Porsche 917s proved that even racing cars do not have to remain on the closed track, as the class winner was the 917 that Count Rossi once had approved for use on public roads.
The Gulf Porsche from 1969 (17-008) or the Martini long-tail version from 1971 (917-045 LH), driven by Gerard Larrousse himself, would certainly also have deserved a prize.
Anniversaries and other highlights
Many anniversaries were also celebrated in Chantilly, such as 100 years of Bentley, while other classes were simply dedicated to brands or personalities, such as the Ballot class, in which the legendary four- and eight-cylinder vehicles from the hand of Ernest Henry took center stage.
A separate class was also dedicated to Marcello Gandini, which was equipped with an above-average number of vehicles, although around half of them ran out of competition.
However, the Autobianchi A112 Runabout, the Ferrari 308 GT Rainbow, the Citroën GS Camargue and the Alfa Romeo Carabo, all Bertone concept cars based on Gandini's design ideas, were on display.
The classification then included production vehicles from Lamborghii, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Ferrari and Bugatti (EB 150 GT). The class victory went to a Miura P400 S.
It doesn't always have to be a Le Mans Bentley
Best of Show in the Concours d'Etat went to the Bentley 8 Litre Foursome Coupé from 1931, whose bodywork had been designed by Freestone & Webb.
The breathtaking Talbot-Lago
Among the post-war vehicles, one of the oldest cars, an incredibly fascinating coupé by Figoni & Falaschi based on the Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport chassis from 1948, won the "Best of Show" award.
The car competed in a category for vehicles that had been shown at the Salon d'Automobile in Paris up to 1961.
This class was filled with powerful vehicles, including a Ferrari 166 Inter with Stabilimenti Farina bodywork from 1950 and the Pegaso Z-120 from 1951.
Small and large classes
While the Japanese sports car class consisted of just four cars, the Voisin class with Voisin bodies was made up of 13 cars.
Fewer clubs?
The clubs have been an interesting part of the Chantilly Concours in recent years. In 2019, the impression was that there were slightly fewer of them. The coveted "Grand Prix des Clubs" trophy went to the Amicale Facel Vega. Like Iso Rivolta, a separate class was also dedicated to this brand, which was won by an HK II.
Modern concept cars as an attraction
As at other Concours, modern concept cars are also honored in Chantilly. The focus here is exclusively on elegance and beauty, whereas the historic cars were primarily judged on their condition. The cars were each presented with models in dresses by famous couturiers.
The McLaren Speedtail came out on top as "Best of Show", but we'll let the readers judge whether it rightly beat the BMW Vision M Next, the Bugatti "La Voiture Noire" and the DS X E-Tense.
And what the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato was doing in this class as a new continuation model, you would probably have to ask Patrick Peter himself.
In any case, the audience showed a different taste and opted for the Volkswagen ID. Buggy.
Overlapping auction
The British auction house Bonhams also brought over 40 cars under the hammer as part of the Concours, but the sales were only mediocre, which was perhaps partly due to the fact that some visitors had to choose between the presentations of the beautiful cars and the auction. The auction results are documented in a separate article.
To liven things up, there were various parades, including those celebrating 100 years of Bugatti and small commercial vehicles from the past.
There was also music and other entertainment on offer. There was certainly no need to be bored in the castle park.
