On May 9, 2024, Artcurial will auction off the 44-car collection of the Swede Staffan Wittmark in Monaco. For this reason, the sale of the "W Collection" is also subtitled "From Stockholm to Monaco".
The total value of the collection has been estimated at EUR 38.5 million, meaning that each car is expected to fetch around EUR 875,000. Given the estimated values of up to EUR 12 million, it is quite surprising that all the sports cars will go under the hammer without a reserve price.
However, it is unlikely that you will be able to buy a Ferrari 275 GTB or a Dino 346 GTS at auction for very little money. Artcurial is sure to attract many bidders on site and via the usual online and telephone channels.
Porsche, Ferrari and the others
The 44 cars are divided between 26 Porsches, 10 Ferraris (and one Dino) and the rest, whose brand names are Chevrolet, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz or Volvo. On average, the cars are 52 years old.
Porsche paradise
Classic Porsches and Ferraris make up by far the largest part of the range, with the 911 S from the late sixties and early seventies accounting for the highest proportion. Interested parties have a virtually free choice between 2.0, 2.2 and 2.4-liter models, as well as between Coupé and Targa versions.
The estimated prices range between 70,000 and 280,000 euros.
At 350,000 to 550,000 euros, the most expensive lot in 911 guise is likely to be an early Porsche Carrera RS, which was delivered new to Ratingen (Germany) in 1972 and came to Sweden as early as 1975.
The Porsche 356 is also well represented and is available in all open variants: Speedster, Roadster, Convertible D and as a "normal" Cabriolet, but as a Super 90. The most expensive original Porsche, estimated at 500,000 to 700,000 euros, is nevertheless a coupé: a 2000 GS Carrera 2 from 1963.
Coupé or convertible?
There is also a variety of body styles among the Ferraris on offer: the 330, 250 and 275 are available either as a convertible or a coupé. The open 250 GT is a Spyder California with a long wheelbase. With the closed Berlinetta, there is a choice between an "SWB" and a "Lusso".
The most expensive cars naturally have a prancing horse as their trademark. These include the Ferrari 250 GT SWB from 1962 (EUR 8.5 to 12 million) and the 250 GT Spyder California LWB from 1958 (EUR 7 to 10 million).
Three Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs are on offer in Monaco: a coupé and two roadsters.
What is remarkable here is that the open 1963 with light-alloy engine and disc brakes was estimated at between 2.4 and 2.9 million euros - almost three times the price of the other roadster. The Gullwing lies between 1.4 and 1.8 million.
Special features
In this high-priced environment, the Volvo P 1800 for 30,000 to 50,000 euros is somewhat out of the ordinary.
The special feature of this car is the fact that it has never left Sweden - at least until the auction in Monaco. The 1957 Chevrolet Corvette also looks somewhat out of place among the exotic cars.
Like the open Jaguar E-Type from 1966, they are the only representatives of their brand. However, they fit the color scheme of the collection, as almost all the cars on offer are either white, grey, black or red. The most striking exceptions are a Porsche 911 S Targa from 1969 in cheerful bright yellow and two green 1970 coupés.
The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, which was built in 2014 and is by far the youngest car in the collection, is striking in a different way.
Further information and detailed descriptions of the individual lots can be found on the corresponding Artcurial auction page.
