When a rumble of thunder resounds from Salzburg's Nesselgraben on Saturday, August 26, it's not the weather that's to blame. Instead, it's the more than 150 racing cars from seven decades that will be making a big splash on the Salzburgring at the ADAC Salzburgring Classic "Sounds of Speed".
When the drivers race their nostalgic speedsters around the 4.2-kilometer high-speed track, spectators experience an impressive journey back in time. The special feature: There are no nerve-wracking regulations or sporting penalties. The only thing that counts is the pure joy of driving.
A total of five starting groups are formed from the participants in the touring car, Grand Tourisme, racing sports car, formula car and pre-war vehicle classes, which ideally have a comparable level of performance. Each of these starting groups drives three rounds with approx. 20 minutes driving time, with the third round taking the form of an Indy start (flying start).
All visitors have the opportunity to get up close to the historic racing cars in the paddock and at the pre-start.
The list of registered vehicles, many of which come from abroad, is impressive and includes everything from touring cars (e.g. Alfa Romeo Giulia) and GTs (e.g. Glas 1300 GT, DKW Monza) to sports cars (e.g. Chevron B16, Veritas RS) and pre-war racing cars (e.g. Maserati 8 CM, ERA).
And as a spectator, you can see and, above all, hear each of these cars drive for around an hour, which also gave the "Sounds of Speed" event its name.
Accordingly, it is not the speed that is judged, but the sound quality!
