The 67th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance took place on Sunday, August 20, 2017. The beauty contest, which as always took place on the Pebble Beach golf course, presented 204 vehicles from 15 different countries and 31 states.
Originally a small event with street races under pine and cypress trees, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance has since become a highly regarded international competition. However, even after 66 years, the aim remains the same - to preserve the mechanical heritage.
Pre-war Mercedes as Best of Show
The Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer from 1929 was named Best of Show 2017. The Tourer came out of restoration in New Jersey just a week before the Concours and, after traveling across the country, managed to snag the top award at the prestigious 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance.
The car was originally delivered to Captain Miller on behalf of Earl Howe, founder of the British Racing Drivers' Club. Bruce R. McCaw, current owner of Bellevue, Washington, explained, "We've had this car for several years, the question was whether or not to restore it. I can't stand restoring something that doesn't need it. But in the end, we had found enough original photos to know that the car needed to be restored."
"This Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer is a combination of speed, style and power," said concours chair Sandra Button. "These three elements - paired with those fantastic looking torpedo running boards - epitomize pure elegance."
Tough competition
In the final round, Bruce R. McCaw was up against his brother John McCaw and his wife Gwen McCaw, who were also nominated for Best of Show with their 1957 Ferrari 315 S Scaglietti Spyder.
In addition, a Packard 906 Twin Six Dietrich Convertible Victoria from 1932 was also to be defeated in the final round.
Preservation Trophy for the best-preserved cars
The FIVA (Fédération International des Véhicules Anciens) also awarded its own trophy to the best-preserved vehicle. It is particularly important that as many parts as possible are still original and that the material and appearance reflect the original condition.
In the pre-war category, the trophy went to the Locomobile Model 38 Collapsible Cabriolet from 1916 by Mike Guffey from Hartford City, Indiana and in the post-war category, the Bentley R-Type Continental H.J. Mulliner Sports Saloon from 1932 by Derek Hood from Maldon, England won.
Elegant Jaguar fresh from restoration
The freshly restored Jaguar XK 120 SE with Pininfarina coupé bodywork attracted many admiring glances.
The one-off was awarded second prize in the "Class O2: Postwar Closed" class. This special bodywork was on public display for the first time at the 1955 Geneva Motor Show. The restoration of the one-off, of whose history unfortunately little is known, was carried out by Classic Motor Car, which involved thousands of hours and the use of a 3D printer.
For a good cause
This year's Pebble Beach Concours raised over $1.6 million to help people in need. These charitable funds will benefit over 80 local charities through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation.
