Forty years ago, Porsche presented the Carrera RS 2.7 for the first time in Paris to an astonished but eager-to-buy fan community. Even at Porsche, nobody would have believed that 1,580 of these vehicles would be built, and the sales department even had to be persuaded to sell the car! The road car was joined by a pure racing car, the RSR 2.8, followed a good year later by the two RS/RSR 3.0s with a strong racing design. When Porsche launched the 911 Turbo, the first European production sports car with a turbocharger, in 1974, the signs on the horizon looked bad with the energy crisis and fears of inflation. But 500 planned units soon turned into thousands and even tens of thousands to date. Eight generations have been built to date, this report compares them and shows the air-cooled ancestors in particular in over 200 pictures.
With the Porsche Turbo, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer raised the bar for super sports cars in 1974. At that time, nobody accelerated more brutally. The Zuffenhausen-based company managed to skillfully combine sportiness and comfort. The difference to the normal 911 had become so great as a result of many conversion measures that the new model was called the 930. By 1989, over 20,000 of the 930 had been built and contributed significantly to the growth of the German sports car manufacturer. Continuous model upgrades kept the 930 young.
