When Fiat presented the new 1800 and its bigger brother, the 2100, in 1959, many previous predictions did not come true. The car was not revolutionary, but it was elegant and technically outstanding. In any case, the 'hobby' tester gave it a good chance in the sporty saloon market. With the 1800, Fiat launched an absolute all-rounder in 1959. The elegant saloon masterfully combined comfort, space and appealing driving performance. The overall package was so convincing that the 1800 could almost be considered an "auto vitruviano". However, like any anthropogenic product, the Italian model student was not immune to flaws. This article reproduces an original test report from spring 1960 and shows the Fiat 1800 in extensive historical images and sales material.
The 1800 from the Turin-based manufacturer had already gained a foothold in the German market by the end of the 1950s. The saloon impressed with its extensive and functional equipment, a modern trapezoidal body and a lively engine that bore the signature of former Ferrari chief engineer Aurelio Lampredi. In 1961, Fiat revised its mid-range car and created the 1800 B, which was equipped with disc brakes and other modifications. While the competitors in the mid-range only offered mundane four-cylinder engines, Fiat offered its customers a smooth six-cylinder with the 1800 B. The 1.8-liter engine was refined, quiet and easy to rev. Only its own temperament could quickly become the six-cylinder's undoing.
