Fiat 1800 in the (historic) test - International ideal type?
Summary
With the 1800, Fiat launched an absolute all-rounder in 1959. The elegant saloon masterfully combined comfort, space and appealing driving performance. The overall package was so convincing that the 1800 could almost be considered an "auto vitruviano". However, like any anthropogenic product, the Italian model student was not immune to flaws. This article reproduces an original test report from spring 1960 and shows the Fiat 1800 in extensive historical images and sales material.

We know of cars that are "typically American", "typically German", "typically English", "typically French", "typically Italian" and "typically Eastern". It is quite clear that the producers in the respective countries consciously or unconsciously incorporate the typical conditions of nature, people, culture and civilization and the standard of living into the design, because these cars are primarily intended to be sold to the people of the country of production. Initially, it was the Citroën DS 19, which broke new and unconventional ground, that broke through the typification. It did not become the "typical European", but in our opinion this distinction is reserved for two newer models, the new Mercedes-Benz 220 and the Fiat 1800. They characterize the ideal type of the new decade into which we entered with the year 1960, they are end stations, temporary end stations in the development of cultivated and technically advanced automobiles from two almost classic automobile factories on the European continent. The fact that both types of vehicle are similar, even though they were developed in completely different countries, proves the thesis that there are not hundreds of ideal solutions, but only one for those who consistently strive for the highest goal.
