The Citroën 2CV was intended to be a car for those who couldn't actually afford one. Spartan and without much ornamentation, it was practical, spacious and cheap to maintain. Despite its simplicity, Citroën implemented some interesting solutions to problems. This historical article from hobby magazine reproduces the thoughts of the specialist press at the time.
"Umbrella on wheels", "warhorse" or even "ugly duckling", the Citroën 2 CV was given many names during its long construction period. Despite many restrictions in terms of the objective of transporting four people protected from the weather at almost motorcycle costs, the design of the 2 CV demonstrated a great deal of innovation and brilliant engineering expertise. The fact that around five million "ducks" were built over a period of 40 years proves the foresight of the builders. This report tells the early history of the 2 CV and describes an example from 1958 in detail, illustrated with a large number of current and historical pictures, several sales brochures, the 1953 handbook and a series of technical drawings.
In 1960, hobby car editor Heinz Kranz set out to meticulously compare the entry-level car class. Using a sophisticated scoring system and a great deal of meticulousness, he looked at driving performance, appearance, practicality and cost and ranked the small cars. From today's perspective, it is particularly interesting that the Fiat 500 and Citroën 2 CV ended up at the bottom of the table, but were the most successful exponents in this class, as they were built until 1975 or even 1990, when the comparison winners had not been on the production line for at least 10 years. In the movie "For your eyes only", James Bond alias Roger Moore was supposed to flee in a white Lotus Esprit S3 Turbo, but it exploded before he could get away. At first glance, naming a 30-year-old car after a 50-year-old dance is not a sign of exuberant youthfulness. But when the Citroën 2 CV Charleston appeared at the end of 1980, the double dose of nostalgia went down particularly well with buyers who were barely older than the Citroën 2 CV and much younger than the Charleston.
