BMW builds a DTM racing car and wins the championship at the first attempt. Not just once, not even twice, but four times in 30 years. Their names were BMW 635 CSI, BMW M3 E30 and M3 DTM and M4 DTM respectively. And they couldn't be more different. In spring 1986, BMW presented the M3 as a basis for racing and probably also as an answer to the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16. The company had consistently followed the path of the evolutionary model, which still offered sufficient suitability for everyday use without sacrificing racing potential. In the end, the M3 became the most successful racing touring car of modern times. The Automobil Revue tested the newcomer in the fall of 1986 and was impressed. This report reproduces the original wording of the test at the time, compares the test results with the Swiss version, which had to comply with the strict Swiss noise regulations, and shows the touring car in many historical photographs.
The BMW M3 E30 became the world's most successful racing touring car of its time. It claimed over 1500 individual victories and 60 national championships. But how does this successful car compare with the BMW M3 E92, which was 25 years younger and raced in the DTM in 2012? In 1986, the first BMW M3, unmistakably a child of its decade with its wide cheeks and rear spoiler, rolled onto the road. The homologation model of the E30 series for the DTM laid the foundation for the legendary sports car dynasty. From this first generation to the more discreet M3 E36 and its successor from the E46 series, the Munich car was constantly refined and underwent major changes. From 1986 to 1990, BMW built the M3 E30 as the base model for Group A racing. The M3 was a winner both on the road and in racing and has long since become a classic.
