It was actually a Swiss man's fault that there was a convertible version of the BMW M3 E30 at all. The M3 was originally created as an evolutionary vehicle for the new Group A in racing. A convertible was hardly intended or necessary. The history of the M3 has already been discussed in detail in previous articles, so it will only be briefly summarized in the following lines. The M3 was created for mass sports, 5000 vehicles had to be produced per year for homologation. Preparations began early, with the first test engine with four cylinders running on the test bench as early as 1981. The cast steel block of the Formula 1 engine was combined with the cut-off M1 cylinder head and the result was convincing. Thanks to the short crankshaft, high engine speeds were possible, which were necessary for a high power output without a turbocharger.
