Most readers will have made their first acquaintance with the BMW M3 in the school playground. In the car quartet, the sporty Munich model was the first contender when it came to top performance in the mid-size class. With 195 hp, it had more power than its eternal rival from Mercedes-Benz, the 190 E 2.3-16. In the late 1980s, none of the pubescent horsepower fans had any idea that this duel would be repeated over the coming decades. To understand the first-generation BMW M3, you have to delve deep into the world of shoulder pads, rollerblade discos and men's loafers. The eighties were a little bizarre when it came to style. Car fashion was in no way inferior, and at the latest since Audi had shown how wide-body construction works with the quattro, flared wheel arches were just as much a must for a sports model as the tableau-like rear wing. BMW therefore had to follow suit, not least because of the motorsport regulations, even though the Munich-based company always found a few explanatory words for the somewhat marinated appearance of its first M3. But back then, the chic of automotive fashion looked exactly like this.
