Like many pioneers in the early days of the car, the trained businessman Erich Bitter began his career as a racing cyclist. He then became a car racer, built and sold tuning parts and became Germany's importer of Italian Intermeccanica sports cars in 1969. Because these did not convince him, he created his own luxury sports coupé with the support of Opel boss Bob Lutz. The formally convincing Bitter Diplomat CD fastback coupé was presented at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show. The self-supporting body was built at the Baur body plant in Stuttgart on the platform of the Opel Diplomat V8 with a GM 5.4 L engine, automatic transmission and De Dion rear axle, which was shortened to a wheelbase of 268 cm. Built until 1979, the 2+2-seater Bitter CD excelled in quality and found 395 enthusiasts. Bitter GmbH & Co KG in Schwelm also tuned various Opel models.
