When Röhrl/Geistdörfer won three years ago in a Lancia Rallye 037, nobody was able to compete with the Italian supercharged car. Three years later, not much is missing and the fastest Group A car - from near-series production - overtakes the best-placed 037. The super racing car has become scrap iron within three years . And in Group B? The regulations allow for an unprecedented, perverse arms race. Five automobile companies are involved: Peugeot 205 16, turbo approx. 450 hp, 930 kg. Lancia Delta S4, compressor and turbo, approx. 440 hp. Audi Quattro S1, turbo, approx. 520 hp, 1200 kg. MG Metro 6R4, 3-liter naturally aspirated V-6 engine, 400 hp, 980 kg. Citroen BX 4TC, turbo, 380 hp, 1100 kg. All of these horsepower pros transfer their power to the ground via all four wheels . The power-to-weight ratio is around 2 kg per hp ! This arms race will have fatal consequences. Rallies are still held on narrow, winding, sometimes unpaved roads, along precipices, covered in snow and ice. It is worrying, for example, that safety tanks are being dispensed with because of a few kilograms of extra weight.
