Summary
In addition to the already rare production sports cars of the Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato and Super Sport Zagato types, Elio Zagato also built a small number of "preparata" models optimized for racing and two factory racing cars between 1960 and 1962. These were lighter and, thanks to increased performance, also faster and won many a class victory at events such as the Targa Florio and the Mille Miglia Rally. This report portrays the class winner of the 1961 Mille Miglia and traces its history as far as is known.

Preview (beginning of the article)
The last classic Mille Miglia took place in 1957, when Alfons Marquis de Portago's Ferrari tragically flew off the road after a tire blowout, killing nine spectators. Between 1958 and 1961, the Mille Miglia then took place less prominently as a stage rally. In the last year (1961), a Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato won in the class up to 2.5 liters displacement and came second overall - a Mille Miglia success that hardly anyone remembers. After Ascari's tragic accident in 1955, Lancia withdrew from motor racing and left the field largely to private drivers, who were also repeatedly successful. In the early 1960s, however, Lancia managers realized that racing trophies were an efficient way of highlighting important Lancia virtues such as safe handling and sporty performance. And so GT vehicles were created that competed in circuit races, rallies and hill climbs.
