From 1979 to 1984, Japan had its own counterpart to the DRM (German Racing Championship, 1972-1985), which was extremely similar to Group 5. This was the "Super Silhouettes" series, which was run as part of the "Fuji Grand Championship". Racing took place on the circuits of Fuji, Tskuba and Suzuka. The rules of the series were rather lax compared to its European counterpart. The cars themselves simply had to have the same silhouette as the production version, had to bear the same name and had to have an engine at their heart that was based on that of the road version. Apart from that, there were neither rules for maximum performance nor a specification regarding the number of vehicles produced. It was therefore not unusual for the Super Silhouette cars to have more horsepower than the Formula 1 cars of the time.
