One of the rarest and probably most beautiful Japanese sports cars is the Nissan Silvia Coupé, of which just over 500 were built in the mid-sixties. Count Goertz created a design milestone that could have made an international career had the vehicle not been so narrowly cut. This report describes the history of its creation and shows an unrestored example in detail, supplemented by many historical illustrations and the original sales brochure.

Launched in Tokyo in 1989, the Figaro was available in little more than a year and saw a rush of buyers like few cars before it. It followed the Nissan Be-1 and the Pao, which many consider to be the first cars to be designed in a retro style. The small, pretty Figaro is even more exotic today than it was then and is rarely seen - no wonder, with only 20,000 vehicles built. While the Nissan models that you could buy from dealers in this country in 1999 were called the Almera, Micra or Maxima and were more or less home cooking, in Japan there was the Skyline GT-R, a super sports car at a budget price, at least if you compared it with Porsche or Ferrari alternatives. From 1999 to 2002, the GT-R was called the R34 and the model achieved cult status in the movie "2 Fast 2 Furious".
