Summary
One of the rarest and probably most beautiful Japanese sports cars is the Nissan Silvia Coupé, of which just over 500 were built in the mid-sixties. Count Goertz created a design milestone that could have made an international career had the vehicle not been so narrowly cut. This report describes the history of its creation and shows an unrestored example in detail, supplemented by many historical illustrations and the original sales brochure.

If you imagine a full-grown American, well-fed on hamburgers and eggs and bacon, getting into the extremely compact Nissan Silvia CSP 311, then it is easy to imagine why the importer at the time did not believe the car would be a success in the USA. The Silvia coupé was a technically interesting vehicle that, thanks to Count Goertz, was dressed in a style that could hardly have been better achieved by Italian star designers. However, the fact that the car was built by hand and only had modest interior dimensions ensured an exclusive circle of buyers, especially as the Nissan was only officially sold in Japan and Australia.
