Summary
Can we really speak of a copy if the original never existed? And more importantly, who cares? The Datsun SP 310 does not deserve to be reduced to outward appearances. After all, it was Japan's first successful production sports car - and a very good car at that. Of course, we could now simply use an MGB as a comparison and humorlessly list the points in which the Datsun is similar to it. But that would be very unimaginative - and unjustified to boot. After all, the Japanese car is almost a year older than the English car it is supposedly modeled on. When the straight-edged Datsun Fair Lady was shown for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1961, Abingdon and Coventry were still producing rounded 1950s models. Even the TR4, with which Triumph was the first of the three major British roadster brands to usher in the modern era, was only three months old at the time. As a result, nobody wrote anything about a copy based on the English model when they saw the first (serious) Far Eastern contribution to the great roadster storm in California.
