The "Grand Heures Automobiles" were organized for the second time on the Linas-Montlhéry racetrack. The most beautiful, the fastest and the most special cars competed on the former high-speed circuit. Around 15,000 people attended the demonstration runs on the Saturday and Sunday of the weekend of September 24 and 25, 2016.
The world-record-breaking Voisin
Almost 89 years to the day after his sensational world records, Voisin returned to Montlhéry with a 7.9-liter inline eight-cylinder engine. On September 26, 1927, the car with Morel, Kirillov and Marchand at the wheel had set over a dozen records, including 4383.85 km in 24 hours, which resulted in an average speed of 182.66 km/h.
It was thanks to the American billionaire Peter Mullin that the record-breaking car could be shown driving together with other Voisin vehicles (including the C1 Competition from 1921, C3 from 1922, C6 Laboratoire from 1923), certainly something very special.
Group B on unfamiliar terrain
The Group B rally cars were also widely announced, which of course presented a rather unfamiliar picture on the banked curves. Unfortunately, some of the expected cars (including Lancia Rally 037 Group B, BMW M1 Group B) did not make it to the event.
But the remaining Group B cars also made the fans' mouths water, with a Mazda RX-7 from 1985, a Ferrari 308 GTB from 1984, as well as an Opel Manta 400 from 1984 and a Renault 5 Turbo Tour de Course from 1983 making their rounds.
Peugeot at the center
Peugeot took the opportunity to support a major classic car event in France and sent a whole delegation of exciting vehicles from the museum to Montlhéry, including the 1966 CD Peugeot 204 Le Mans prototype, the Peugeot 204 with East African Safari history, as well as two Pikes Peak cars, namely a 405 driven by Ari Vatanten and a 208 as piloted up the mountain by Sébastian Loeb.
Sports and racing cars on the track
In general, the range of vehicles on display was impressive in terms of breadth and variety, even if not all of the cars on show were able to compete at the same level.
It's not easy to steal the show from a Bugatti Type 35 or 51, especially in France. Various MG pre-war sports cars and particularly rarely seen racing cars such as the Guyot Spéciale from 1924 or a Rallye NCP from 1934 naturally felt right at home on the 98-year-old Linas-Montlhéry circuit.
Motorcycles and formula cars too
In addition to the pre-war group, Group B, the Peugeot demo races and plateaux with more modern cars, there was also a separate group with formula cars and open-top sports cars, which featured some wonderful contrasts, with a 1960 Lola Mk 1 racing alongside a 1992 Peugeot Spider 905.
A total of 160 cars, including some touring and GT sports cars and 60 motorcycles, were on display on the circuit.
Celebrities at the wheel
However, there were not only well-known and historically interesting vehicles to watch, but also many heroes of French racing history, rally, formula, touring car and sports car drivers such as Jean-Claude Andruet, Anthony Beltoise, Francois Chatriot, Max Cohen-Olivar, Philippe Gache, Jean-Pierre Jaussaud, Michel Leclère Jean-Pierre Malcher, Bob Neyret, Jean-Pierre Nicolas, Henri Pescarolo, Jean Ragnotti, Bruno Saby, Pierre de Thoisy, Jean Vinatier, etc.. Jürgen Barth also made a point of appearing in France.
Again in 2017
While the weather was sunny on Saturday, clouds gathered on Sunday and it started to rain at midday.
The agreement between the organizers of Les Grand Heures and the Linas-Montlhéry circuit extends into 2020, so it is safe to assume that top-class historic racing cars will be back again next year. Perhaps some of the organizational deficits can be eliminated by then and we can hope that all the registered cars will actually appear.
