Preview (beginning of the article)
The 18th special stage over the notorious Col d'Espréaux is won by another young star, the Finn Ari Vatanen together with his English co-driver Terry Harryman in the French Peugeot 205, 40 seconds ahead of Röhrl/Geistdörfer in an Audi. The two roll towards the Gap with a lead of over 3 minutes. A well-deserved break is imminent. The time control in the middle of the small town of Gap is approached without any problems, the timekeepers enter the time of day on the boarding card and hand it back to Harryman in the car. At the same moment, all hell breaks loose. Terry realizes that he has clocked in four minutes early, which means eight penalty minutes. Terry's world falls apart. Instead of being 3 minutes 19 seconds ahead, they are now 4 minutes 41 seconds behind! A poorly legible start time correction on the boarding card before the ride over the Col d'Espréaux, a hectic rush at the time control in Gap, press people, a brief distraction and the mistake is made. Vatanen soon catches himself - Harryman needs hours. On the next five stages up to Monaco, Vatanen accelerates so uncompromisingly that Röhrl/Geistdörfer are only 2 minutes ahead before the night of the long knives.
