Classic Days is the name of the annual classic car event at Schloss Dyck, near Düsseldorf, which is not entirely coincidentally reminiscent of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Except that there is no hill climb but a circuit, which is much better. And that the number of vehicles that show off their talents on this circuit is more in the double rather than triple digits. Another difference is perhaps that the number of spectators is measured in five figures and not in hundreds of thousands. But that's also quite likeable.
However, visitors who have paid between 12 and 12 euros in admission fees, depending on the day, hardly notice any deficits. On the contrary, they are overwhelmed with impressions. There is something to see at every turn and the club vehicles in the miscanthus field alone can keep a fan busy for a whole day.
Jewels on the peninsula
The main attractions, however, are to be found in the castle park around the Orangerie, the vehicles of the FIVA Concours d'Elégance, which is appropriately called "Jewels in the Park".
These are indeed jewels that Marcus Herfort and his team have brought together. They compete for elegance and condition rating. Special emphasis is placed on the creations of the great carossiers and so in 2014 creations from almost all the masters - Pinin Farina, Figoni & Falaschi, Saoutchik, Giullore, James Young, Barker, Touring, Erdmann & Rossi, Wendler, Graber, Beutler, etc. - can be admired. - to admire.
The Lancia Astura with Pinin-Farina bodywork from 1939, which competed in the "Noblesse & Design" class, was voted "Best of Show". The Mercedes Benz 380 K Erdmann & Rossi from 1933 took second place in the overall standings.
The class winners were the OM 665 SSMM Compressore Spider from 1931, the Bentley 4 1/4 Litre Convertible Veth & Zoon from 1936, the Duesenberg Model "A" from 1923, the Packard Super Eight 1004 Victoria Convertible from 1933, the Mercedes Benz 380 K Erdmann & Rossi from 1933, the Lancia Astura Cabriolet by Pinin Farina from 1939, the Alfa Romeo 6C2500S Convertible from 1947, a Mercedes Benz 300 SL Coupé from 1957, the Fiat Simca 8 Sport Grolleau Deho Barquetta from 1938, the Maserati 3500 GT Spyder Vignale from 1963, the Alfa Romeo Super Sprint Zagato from 1955 and the Ferrari 500 Mondial Series II from 1955.
There are exciting stories surrounding some of the 57 vehicles on display. For example, the Mercedes Benz 500 K with Erdmann & Rossi bodywork. In the 1930s, the King of Iraq had this car built for him. Many years later, the vehicle was to be loaned to the royal court of Jordan and finally returned to Sadam Hussein. Prior to this, however, a 1:1 copy had been built in Germany, which was copied from the original due to a lack of plans and documentation. The original vehicle was returned to Baghdad and is probably hidden away in a state depot. The copy, however, has survived and today, when it is not on display in the park at Schloss Dyck, it can be found in the Sinsheim Museum of Technology.
Lightweight construction on the circuit
While some marvel at elegant concours cars, others wait on the narrow circuit for the cycle cars, the lightweight racing cars that were created in the 1920s and could compete with many a heavyweight and powerful car. They raced around 90 years ago at the Autodrome de Monthéry. This was one of the first permanent racetracks in Europe and the 2.55-kilometre oval circuit with its banked corners allowed high speeds and, thanks to its width of around 20 meters, comfortable overtaking manoeuvres. In terms of driving, this was quite demanding. But those who were able to do so achieved incredible speeds. In 1925, Mrs. Gwenda Steward set a long-lasting track record of almost 235 km/h on a Derby with an American Miller engine.
After a few years, the track was extended to a ten-kilometer road course. As a result, the French Grand Prix could now be held in Montlhéry, which happened regularly between 1931 and 1937.
In 1939, the French state took over the race track, which was suspended during the war. The track was renovated and modernized in 1946. Formula and sports car races were held until the 1970s. The last "1000 km of Paris" race took place in 1971, although the uneven concrete track was no longer suitable for sports cars even then.
These endurance races were discontinued as a result of a serious accident, but were reactivated in the 1990s. However, racing soon went into decline again and the track began to fall apart, with no one willing to bear the cost of renovating it.
Although events are still held in Monthléry today, real races are no longer possible. However, the spirit of the cycle car races of that time is revived by the Sénéchal, Salmson, Amilcar, De Coucy, Anzani Collet and Rally vehicles on the circuit around Dyck Castle, much to the delight of the spectators.
But it's not only small-volume pre-war racers that curve around the castle; the Lancia D50, which Jano developed in the 1950s, is also impressive. The weight was optimally distributed between the wheels, and the V8 engine with two overhead camshafts was more compact than its competitors' units. The gearbox was coupled to the rear axle as a transaxle and the fuel tanks were located on both sides between the axles. Ascari was able to win grand prizes with the car straight away, but it was only under the Ferrari racing team that the cars reached top form and won the world championship with Juan Manuel Fangio at the wheel.
The Bentley boys as popular figures
Crowds of people always form around the large-volume Bentley sports cars, which are driven on the road from England to Germany by the so-called Bentley Boys, just as they were 80 years ago. Camaraderie is the top priority. If a Bentley driver breaks an oil pipe on the Dyck circuit, helping hands are immediately on hand to remove the mishap and its traces. Just like in the old days!
Stars and stripes
The Americans are guests at Schloss Dyck for the first time. Chrome, fins and panoramic windows are typical stylistic elements of cars from the fifties and sixties, which are represented by the brands Lincoln, Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Dodge, Plymouth and Ford. An attractive addition!
If you don't plan and pay attention, it's easy to miss one or two attractions at Schloss Dyck, be it the picnic scenes in the style of yesteryear, ....
.... the historic camping scene, ....
... the manufacturers' special exhibitions or the DeLorean DMC12 from the film trilogy "Back to the Future", which with its flux compensator could create those leaps in time that you experience at the Classic Days without taking the risks of traveling back in time.
For the sake of completeness, we should also add that the weather was largely beautiful throughout the weekend. This is certainly not a matter of course in summer 2014.
