Rinspeed Porsche 969 Turbo - broadside
Summary
Car customization was very popular in the 1980s; discerning sports car customers did not want an off-the-peg car. Companies such as Rinspeed offered a high degree of customization and often also vehicle versions that were not available from the manufacturer. With the Rinspeed Porsche 969 Turbo, Frank M. Rinderknecht even succeeded in creating a small "series", as twelve of these coupés with flanks reminiscent of the Testarossa were produced. This report tells the story of the Rinspeed Porsche and shows it in current and historical pictures.

In the 1980s, courageous car tuners outdid themselves when it came to refining Porsche vehicles. The sports cars couldn't be wide and flashy enough. Gemballa, RUF and Rinspeed were the names of the companies that outdid each other at the motor shows of the time. Frank M. Rinderknecht, a car visionary who regularly surprises with mobility studies at the major motor shows, spent part of his student days in the USA and observed a new trend there: the sunroof for cars. He immediately installed one of these glass roofs in his Fiat 128 Coupé and aroused so much interest among his acquaintances that it became a business. An advertisement in Automobil Revue brought him so much interest that he dropped out of his mechanical engineering studies at ETH Zurich before the seventh semester and founded "Rinspeed".
