A six-cylinder Lancia was expected, but the new Gamma surprises with a 2.5 liter four-cylinder boxer engine and front-wheel drive. Is this the recipe for a luxury car? Disappointment was the first reaction among connoisseurs when they learned that the new Lancia's 2.5-liter displacement was divided between just four cylinders. The style, shaped by Pininfarina and the wind tunnel, takes no account of conventional German ideas. But the compact car, which at 4.58 meters in length is five centimeters shorter but four centimeters wider than the BMW 5 Series models, proves on closer inspection and testing to be the uncompromising realization of a technical philosophy: exactly what is expected of a Lancia, which in any case only appeals to a limited and very committed group of buyers.
