Have you ever heard of a certain Piero Frescobaldi? Or perhaps you are familiar with the Rallye dei Fiori, the one from 1962? No? Well, that's hardly surprising. So let's find out why Frescobaldi and the Italian regional event are of crucial importance for motorsport in general. Frescobaldi won the aforementioned Rally dei Fiori in 1962 at the wheel of a Lancia Flavia. This was not the most significant rally victory for the Turin-based brand in those years; Louis Chiron/Ciro Basadonna had already won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1954, driving one of the wonderful Aurelia GTs. However, Frescobaldi's victory gave the Lancia management the idea in the early 1960s to revive motorsport, which had been abandoned after the death of Alberto Ascari on May 26, 1954. Ascari had crashed a Ferrari in Monza during test drives - he had been at the wheel wearing a shirt and tie - and Scuderia Lancia had given away all its racing equipment to Ferrari on July 26, 1955; including the highly competitive D50 model, with which Juan-Manuel Fangio was to become world champion for the fourth time in the same year. But back to the Rally dei Fiori. Frescobaldi's victory convinced the management to found the Squadra Corse - they wanted to prove how brilliant the Lancia series products were in rallying, which was still fairly inexpensive at the time. The lucky symbol of Gianni Lancia, the son of the company founder, was taken up again, this time with the little elephant in red and the letters HF (High Fidelity). And the Squadra Corse was an immediate success. Initially with the Flavia Coupé and the Sport Zagato, but then, from the mid-1960s, things really took off - the magic word was Fulvia. Introduced in 1963, the small Lancia was a wonderful, inexpensive sports car that was also enjoyed by private drivers - in total, the Fulvias achieved over 1000 racing victories. The most significant of these was at the Monte Carlo Rally in 1972, shortly before the end of the vehicle's life cycle. At the wheel was a man who played a decisive role in the history of Lancia rallying: Sandro Munari.
