Summary
With the Lancia 037 Rally, the Italians had built the last rear-wheel drive car to become world rally champion. However, the mid-engined sports car was no longer able to keep up with rivals such as the Audi quattro and later the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 from 1984 onwards. A replacement was needed and the Lancia Delta S4 was another rally winner. But first 200 road versions had to be sold and that was not easy at all. This vehicle article portrays a Lancia Delta S4 Stradale and looks back at its development history.

But for Group B rally racing, this front-engine variant was clearly too well-behaved; something much wilder was needed. When developing the Delta S4, they pulled out all the stops and also used the knowledge gained from rallying with the 037. Once again, a tubular frame (made of chrome-molybdenum steel) served as the basis, and once again the engine was located in front of the rear axle. Once again, double wishbones all around provided the wheel guidance. And again, the body was made of plastic.
