Preview (beginning of the article)
The conditions that RM/Sotheby's found in the park of Villa Erba in Cernobbio on May 27, 2017 were almost perfect. Pleasant early summer temperatures, a cloudless sky and a full "house", attracted by 45 attractive cars, a boat and 20 motorcycles. One might have expected a top result, but the auction did not go quite so smoothly after all. Seventeen cars were offered with estimated prices of over one million euros. However, only eight of them were sold: the most expensive car, a Mercedes-Benz 680 S Torpedo-Sport Avant Garage by Saoutchik from 1928, a crowned Concours winner, was left standing (highest bid EUR 5.05 million), as was a McLaren P1 GTR from 2016 that was almost 90 years younger (highest bid EUR 2.85 million) and an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS Spider from 1930.
