With the Lancia 037 Rally, the Italians had built the last rear-wheel drive car to become world rally champion. However, the mid-engined sports car was no longer able to keep up with rivals such as the Audi quattro and later the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 from 1984 onwards. A replacement was needed and the Lancia Delta S4 was another rally winner. But first 200 road versions had to be sold and that was not easy at all.
