Summary
The choice of mid-range vehicles in Germany at the beginning of the 1970s was diverse. Front or rear-wheel drive, front or rear engine, water cooling or air cooling were on offer, as were two or four doors. In a 1970 comparison, the Ford 15 M had to compete against the Audi 60, Peugeot 304 and VW 1600. The comparison test report of the time shows who came out on top and who was judged best by the test drivers.

Principle for the four-way test: roughly the same size, roughly the same performance and operating costs, similar group of buyers. In this case: the bourgeois middle class. Three German and one French car. Displacement once 1300 cc, twice 1500 cc and once 1600 cc. In the case of Audi, Ford and VW, we selected the model with full equipment that is predominantly purchased. The Peugeot has standard equipment. The three German cars in this comparison group differ only slightly in terms of exterior length; the Ford 15 M XL is only 9 mm longer than the Audi 60 L at 438.9 cm. After being lengthened by 11.5 cm to the front in August 1969, the VW 1600 L/TL, with an exterior length of 434 cm, almost caught up with these two cars. In contrast, the Peugeot 304 is considerably shorter at 414 cm, although the axle/axle dimension (= wheelbase), which is important for space distribution and driving safety, is the largest at 259 cm. The Ford is 252.7 cm, the Audi 249 cm, but the VW 1600 only 240 cm.
