This is the first time that RM/Sotheby's has auctioned cars in Switzerland. The Bentley/Rolls-Royce auction in Liechtenstein gave a foretaste, but with St. Moritz, RM/Sotheby's has now finally arrived in Switzerland in collaboration with the Bernina Granturismo mountain race. On September 17, 2021, 22 cars with a total value of CHF 18.6 million will go under the hammer. This means that almost CHF 844,000 is expected per car, which already says a lot about the offer.
Low average age
At just over 32 years old, the vehicles are rather young, with an average age of just under that of a classic car. This is due to a significant proportion of younger super sports and off-road vehicles.
Porsche accounts for the largest share with six cars, followed by Mercedes-Benz with three cars. All other 13 brands are represented with one vehicle each.
While many cars come from Switzerland, some are also delivered from abroad and are only subject to temporary customs clearance. In these cases, Swiss buyers will incur additional costs on top of the bidder surcharge (12.5/15%). For buyers not resident in Switzerland, the situation is of course reversed/different.
Two 300 SLs and a BMW 507
With two Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs and a BMW 507, the German super sports car segment of the 1950s is almost comprehensively represented.
The 1955 Gullwing was estimated at CHF 1.29 to 1.5 million.
RM estimates CHF 1 to 1.2 million for the 1961 Roadster with disc brakes.
The most expensive car in this trio, however, is the BMW 507 from 1958, a car from the second series. The estimated value here is CHF 2 to 2.2 million.
Especially younger Porsches
Of the six Porsches on offer, one 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring from 1973 and one 911 (993) GT2 Clubsport from 1996 are among the four neoclassic candidates.
The RS 2.7 with chassis number 9113600983 was delivered in Germany in 1973 and is one of 1308 M472 Touring examples built. Completely restored and only temporarily duty paid, the white car is expected to find a new owner for CHF 450,000 to 550,000.
Significantly more money is expected for the black 993 GT2 Clubsport from 1996, with at least CHF 1.1 to 1.3 million to be paid if RM/Sotheby's estimate holds up.
In comparison, the 996 GT3 RS from 2004, one of only 682 examples, seems almost cheap, as CHF 150,000 to 200,000 should be enough to buy it.
The Graber-Delahaye
The oldest car in the auction is a Delahaye 135M from 1946 with chassis number 800320, fitted with bodywork by Hermann Graber. It is said to be one of only two such models that Graber fitted with his elegant cabriolet body at the time. The car is now painted dark blue and was restored in the USA a few years ago.
Equipped with a Cotal gearbox, this rare car was estimated at a moderate CHF 275,000 to 325,000. It is also temporarily in Switzerland, duty paid.
Superrare super sports car of the modern era
Switzerland appears to be a good market for rare super and hyper sports cars.
Several of these cars will be on the market at the RM auction, including a Saleen S7 Twin Turbo from 2005, a Lexus LFA from 2011, an Aston Martin One-77 from 2021, a Porsche 918 from 2015 and a rarely seen Dallara Stradale from 2019.
Few super classics
The super classics almost seem to be somewhat overlooked in the range. A Maserati is missing, as is a Lamborghini, while an XK 120 does the honors for Jaguar.
The highlight, however, is one of the rare Austin-Healey 100 S, which is said to be one of only around 50 original cars with an aluminum body. The car with chassis number AHS3604 has been in the same ownership for 19 years and is now set to find its way into a new enthusiast's garage for CHF 650,000 to 900,000.
Around double the price is expected for one of the 114 Fiat 8Vs ("Otto Vu") built, which will go under the hammer with chassis number 106.000011. The car is from the first series, has a Rappi factory body and was extensively restored between 2011 and 2014. It is now expected to attract bids in the CHF 1.3 to 1.6 million range.
While a historic Ferrari is missing, at least a Dino 246 GT from 1971 with chassis number 02020 represents the history of Enzo Ferrari. The coupé was restored in 2012 and repainted in the original "Rosso Bordeaux" color. Now CHF 320,000 to 375,000 is to be forked out to acquire the Dino, which was originally delivered to Italy but is now domiciled in Switzerland.
... and a Formula 1 racing car
Kimi Räikkönen and David Coulthard drove the 2002 McLaren MP4 17D (MP4-17A-06) to victory and several top places in 2002 and 2003.
Now the monoposto, which is in 2002 specification, is said to cost CHF 2 to 2.5 million.
