For the second time this year, RM Auctions is hosting a European auction in Monaco on 10 May 2014, this time as part of the Monaco GP Historique. The offer is impressive and, in keeping with the occasion, the proportion of racing and rally cars is over 20%.
81 cars (plus two boats and two motorcycles/scooters) are on the lot list. The cars are valued at € 40 to 50 million (CHF 49 to 62 million), with each car expected to change hands for an average of € 559,400 or CHF 682,417, six of the vehicles even for well over a million, with the most expensive car estimated to be a Ferrari 275 GTB/C from 1966.
11 cars belong more to the modern era (after 1995), post-war cars clearly dominate. 21 cars, which corresponds to 26%, are offered without a minimum price, so downward fluctuations are not impossible.
Rarities for the road
In addition to auction standards such as 15 Ferrari sports cars, including rare examples such as a Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series 1 from 1959 or a 330 GTS from 1967 as well as a modern 575 GTZ by Zagato from 2006, several Lamborghinis and five Porsches, including two Speedsters, there are also a number of rarely offered rarities on the list.
The Maserati A6 1500 Turismo with Pinin Farina bodywork from 1950 is one of the very first road-going sports cars from the Modenese sports car manufacturer. If it were a Ferrari, it would probably be worth several million, but as a Maserati it has to make do with a modest estimate of 380,000 to 480,000 euros (CHF 463,600 to 585,600).
The elegant Siata Daina 1400 Coupé from 1952 was once drawn by Bertone and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; now the four-cylinder GT is expected to fetch 180,000 to 220,000 euros (CHF 219,600 to 268,400).
Once again, a Toyota 2000 GT is set to change hands for a purchase price of well over half a million euros, making the Fiat Abarth 695 SS and Giannini 650 HP on offer directly affordable in comparison, with estimated prices below the 50,000 euro mark.
One of the eleven Mercedes Benz 300 SLs from the 1950s converted by AMG between 1996 and 2009 is more likely to raise eyebrows. The original vehicle from 1954, converted for an oil sheikh with a modern engine, suspension, wheels and interior elements, is expected to fetch Euro 740'000 to 940,000 (CHF 902,800 to 1,146,800), a high expectation given the current trend towards more originality and patina.
Racing cars as salt in the soup
However, the main reason for many collectors to travel to Monaco for the RM auction (or to take part by telephone or via the Internet) is likely to be the 17 racing cars on offer, as they include many cars that rarely make it to the public sale.
This is the first Hesketh 308 Formula 1 monoposto from 1974, driven by James Hunt and Alan Jones. This car went down in history because it was already faster in the first test after the 1974 Brazilian Grand Prix than the McLaren that had taken pole position in practice. At the Silverstone International Trophy Race, Hunt then achieved his first victory in the Hesketh 308 by overtaking Ronnie Peterson's Lotus with a daring overtaking maneuver at Woodcote Corner towards the end of the race.
Fully restored and in its original colors, the Hesketh is now said to be worth 350,000 to 650,000 euros (CHF427,000 to 793,000). The wide range reveals the uncertainty that prevails in the valuation of historic Formula 1 vehicles.
A Ferrari F1 from 1989 is offered at a higher price and a very good-looking replica of the 1955 Lancia D50A Formula 1 car could also just break the million barrier, while a Tyrrell 010 is expected to fetch a comparatively modest EUR 215,000 to 285,000.
For fans of historic F1 racing, however, the 1966 Brabham-Repco BT 20, which won the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix with Denny Hulme at the wheel, should be particularly attractive. The impressive Palmares is expected to fetch between EUR 580,000 and 720,000 (CHF 707,600 to 878,400).
Legendary sports car
While an Alfa Romeo 33/2 Daytona from 1966 is expected to fetch over €1.1 million, an Alpine M64 can be bought at auction for a comparatively low €150,000 to €200,000.
The Mirage M12 Group C sports car from 1982, which is set to change hands for around a quarter of a million euros, is pretty as a picture, while the Aston Martin AMR1 Group C racing car from 1989 will go for almost a million.
Even higher bids are expected for the Lister-Jaguar "Knobbly" prototype from 1958. Once bought by Briggs Cunningham as the first of a kind, the aggressively styled sports car achieved many first places.
The Ferrari Dino 206 S from 1966, which has been converted into a flat Spider with a 312P look, and the first Maserati 450 S by Fantuzzi from 1956 are also expected to fetch prices in the six-figure range, with the Maserati even expected to fetch between €4 million and €5.5 million.
Shy finds must not be missing
Of course, the "barn finds" are not missing in Monaco either. An Iso Rivolta IR 300 GT from 1963, which had been waiting to be rediscovered in dry storage in Switzerland since 1977, presumably with just 11,530 km on the clock, is now being offered for between 30,000 and 50,000 euros (CHF 36,600 and 61,000 euros).000) and for the Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 Spider Veloce from 1965, the highest bidder will have to put Euro 30,000 to 40,000 (CHF 36,600 to 48,800) on the table to acquire a vehicle that will probably swallow up several times that amount as a restoration budget.
