The three most legendary motorsport events still held today are the Monaco GP, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indianapolis 500. The four best events on the historic scene are probably the Mille Miglia, the Le Mans Classic, the Goodwood Revival and the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique.
Spectacular and international starting fields
And what the Monegasques put on the grid on the weekend of May 9-11, 2014 was once again unique. The 43 Formula 1 monoposti from the period 1973 to 1978 alone thrilled spectators and participants alike, both formally and acoustically. And a sports car field with over 40 sports car rarities from twelve manufacturers that actively competed in races between 1949 and 1955 is not something you see every day.
Around 240 vehicles from almost 60 brands were at the start, with Lotus making up the largest delegation, followed by March, Cooper, Ferrari and Maserati.
The teams and their drivers came from around 20 nations. Not unexpectedly, the British made up the largest contingent, followed by the French, the Italians and, at a respectful distance, the Germans, the Monegasques and the Swiss.
Seven races
A total of seven fields of unique racing cars took part in practice runs on Friday and Saturday and then raced almost every hour on Sunday over 10 to 18 laps through the Monegasque urban canyons.
In addition to the pre-war racing cars and a field of sports cars, mainly single-seaters from various eras were on the move, bringing back many memories of the old days of the Monaco Grand Prix.
In fantastic weather, the fans, who unfortunately were not very numerous, were treated to an impressive spectacle.
Regardless of losses
The cars raced as if there was no tomorrow and with little regard for the vehicles, some of which cost millions.
Some were incredibly fast and safe on the road. First and foremost the Englishman Matthew Grist in the 1934 Alfa Romeo Tipo B (P3), who not only won the pre-war car race (Series A), but also set the fastest lap time (1:59.058). No pre-war racing car had ever lapped this circuit in under two minutes, with an average speed of 100.99 km/h. He moved the Alfa artistically between the planks.
Another Briton, Alex Buncombe in the Jaguar C-Type, is on the same level. The winner of the sports car race loves to drift and he demonstrated his driving skills in practically every corner. He even skillfully placed the rear wheels next to the front wheels in the fast right-hand tunnel. In the race, he gave his rivals no chance.
Unlucky Swiss in the pre-war field
The Swiss have been regulars ever since the first historic event in Monaco in 1997. In 2014, they once again competed in several racing classes.
In field A, the pre-war racing cars, Jürg König tried his hand with the Bugatti 37A and Michael Gans with the ERA B. The reason for this was that König had to withdraw from qualifying due to a recent hand injury (such cars still need healthy and strong arms) and Gans unfortunately deformed the front axle of the ERA beyond repair in qualifying. Rainer Ott, who was unable to complete a single lap in his 1936 ERA Type B, fared little better.
The result was an almost exclusively English guest appearance, with Grist's Alfa Romeo P3 in the lead, closely followed by Paddin Dowling in the 1936 ERA B. The fastest Bugatti only managed to finish in 6th place, although it won its class. The Voiturettes hardly stood a chance against the mighty Alfa Romeo and ERA, and the minimum qualifying times prevented some participants from even taking part in the race.
Close decision for the fifties monoposti
The race for F1 and F2 cars up to 1961 (Series B) was won by Roger Wills in a 1959 Cooper T51 Climax, closely followed by German Frank Stippler in a 1958 Maserati 250 F ("Piccolo"). The top six finished the exciting race within just under eight seconds of each other, with four different makes battling it out for victory.
The Cooper brand dominated the field, but the two BRM P48s from Hall and Baxter proved strong and finished in 5th and 6th place.
English dominance in the sports cars
The English had a firm grip on the sports car race, which is the real exception in the event, as otherwise only monoposti and Grand Prix cars are on the grid. Buncombe won convincingly in the 1952 Jaguar C Type, followed by two Bristol sports cars driven by Ure and Wakeman.
The first non-English driver to finish in fourth place was the German Michael Willms in a 1955 Maserati 150S/200S, followed by the Frenchman Nicolas Chambon in a 1955 Maserati 300 S, followed by another Briton.
Lukas Hüni, Carlo Vögele and Arnold Meier were three Swiss players at the start. For both Hüni and Vögele, it was their first participation in the Principality. The unusually narrow race track was not quite to Vögele's taste, but he held his own in the race and avoided all the jostling. Lukas Hüni demonstrated the strengths of his Maserati and fought his way up to tenth place. He was just nine seconds slower per lap than the flying Briton with his drifting C-Type. It should be noted that there were some major differences between the cars, as one of them already had disc brakes while others still had to make do with drum brakes.
In addition, not all of the competitors were able to fall back on optimal gear ratios for the narrow circuit.
Arnold Meier finished the race in 28th place in his 1953 Ferrari 250 MM.
Studer successful at the first start
Peter Studer took up the challenge with the Lotus 24 in the 1500 cm3 F1 racing cars from 1961 to 1965. He went into the first training session with great respect. He was particularly impressed by the fast right-hand bend in the tunnel. "As the radius of the bend gets tighter, it's very important to find the right turn-in point to avoid suddenly ending up in the barrier," says Studer. He had already got used to the selective track in qualifying and was able to improve by a whole nine seconds and put the Lotus in 11th place on the grid (out of a total of 34 grid positions). With a controlled but consistently fast race, he was able to make up another three places and the Monaco newcomer finished in an impressive eighth place.
Incidentally, the winner of the race for the slim 1500 cc monoposti was Andy Middlehurst in a 1962 Lotus 25 Climax, who saw the chequered flag well ahead of Sidney Holle in a Cooper T66.
When the monoposti became colorful
With the advent of advertising in Formula 1, the cars became more colorful and the national colors disappeared. This could be seen very clearly in the Series E - Formula 1 cars from 1966 to 1972 - and a car with a famous livery, namely the John Player Special Lotus 72 from 1971, was at the top, followed by a Brabham BT 33 and a Matra MS120B.
This field in particular offered a rich spectrum of vehicles, with brands such as Lotus, Brabham, Matra, Surtees, Ferrari, McLaren, De Tomaso, Gurney Eagle, March and BRM represented.
Without ground effect
For many, the F Series race was a highlight, as the field of racing cars built between 1973 and 1978 without ground effect was hard to beat. However, the race itself was somewhat boring, as the leader Michael Lyons in his 1977 Hesketh 308 E distanced the rest by over 30 seconds.
Perhaps one or two gentleman drivers wondered whether they shouldn't have bid for the ex-James Hunt-Hesketh from 1974 at the RM auction on Saturday evening, which ultimately only sold for just under half the estimated price.
Ex-GP driver Jean-Denis Délétraz was also at the start in a Surtees TS19 and Hans Peter in an ex-car of Didier Pironi, the white and blue Tyrrell 008. Pironi's team colleague Patrick Depailler had won the 1978 Monaco GP in the same car.
Délétraz put the Surtees 14th on the grid with a lap time of 1:41.944 in practice and then fought his way up to fourth in the race, improving his lap time to 1:37.248. Peter had started 12th in the Tyrrell ahead of him and moved up to 8th in the race.
Italian and Japanese dominance in Formula 3
It was not the English but the Italians who ruled the roost in Formula 3 with the 2-liter cars from 1974 to 1978 (Series G). Although English brands dominated, four of the top six finishers came from Italy. The engines of the top-placed cars all came from Toyota.
Italian Paolo Barilla won the race in a 1976 Chevron B34 Toyota, followed by Valerio Leone in a 1978 March 783.
Swiss driver Giacomo Talleri finished the race in 26th place in his 1977 Ralt RT1 Toyota.
The next Grand-Prix Historique de Monaco will take place in 2016.
