For the third time, RM/Sotheby's will be auctioning off cars in the popular tourist resort on September 15, 2023 as part of the St. Moritz International Automobile Week. There will be 110 vehicles in total, including five Lambrettas, four tractors, two Ape cars and a handful of commercial vehicles.
Some things are unusual about this auction, such as the high "no reserve" share of 88 percent, but also the average value of CHF 93,543 or EUR 98,220, which is low by RM standards.
This is mainly due to the fact that, in addition to the expected super classics, a large number of less expensive but no less attractive cars will also go under the hammer at this auction. This dichotomy is due to the high proportion of vehicles from the "Iseli Collection", which makes up over four-fifths of the offer.
Half a century old
On average, the cars on offer are just over 50 years old.
Half of the range is made up of cars from Mercedes-Benz (27 vehicles), Fiat (16) and Alfa Romeo (15). They are followed by Volkswagen (8), Porsche (7), Lambretta (5) and Ferrari/Dino (4).
Super classics
Of course, there is no shortage of super classics at such a glamorous location as St. Moritz. Logically, they also dominated the upper value spectrum.
On September 15, 2023, three Aston Martin cars from the David Brown era will go under the hammer, namely a 1961 DB4 (CHF 375,000 to 425,000), a 1965 DB5 Vantage (CHF 1.1 to 1.6 million) and a 1966 DB6 Vantage (CHF 260,000 to 320,000. The DB4 will be sold without a reserve price.
Four sports cars from Maranello will compete in mid-September, two Dino, a 365 GT 2+2 from 1970 and a barely run-in and hand-shifted F355 as a coupé from 1995. The two Dinoin gray and red, a GT from 1971 (CHF 350,000 to 400,000) and a GTS from 1973 (450,000 to 500,000) are both Ferrari Classiche-certified.
Only one Maserati is on offer in St. Moritz, but it is a very attractive-looking Mistral Spyder from 1966, which was on display at the Valencia Motor Show in the year of its birth and was shown at the Amelia Island Concours in 2017. Only 46 such 3.7-liter Spyders were built, and the gold-colored car is offered for CHF 380,000 to 420,000.
There is also only one Lamborghini vehicle up for auction, a 400 GT 2+2 from 1967 for CHF 250,000 to 350,000 in a magnificent blue color scheme.
Depending on how you count, 10 Porsches will be on offer in St. Moritz, three of which are tractors. The 356 A Speedster from 1958, which is looking for a new owner for CHF 280,000 to 320,000, should be of particular interest to classic car enthusiasts. Two original 911s from 1969 and 1970 represent the early 911 era, while a 914 2.0 from 1973 offers Porsche driving pleasure at an entry-level price (CHF 35,000 to 45,000).
The beautiful 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 roadster, for which RM has set an estimate of CHF 275,000 to 325,000, is also worth mentioning.
And of course, don't forget to add the attractive Alpine A110 1600 S from 1973, which is looking for a new stable for CHF 80,000 to 120,000.
Southerners
Cars from Italy are strongly represented in St. Moritz, especially by the brands Alfa Romeo and Fiat, for which Mr. Iseli obviously has a great soft spot.
He was particularly keen on the Giulia, seven of which were sold in the CHF 23,000 to 40,000 price range (all without a reserve price).
However, an Alfetta 1.6 from 1977, a Giulietta 1.3 from 1979, a brown Alfasud 1.2 from 1981 and a 1750 Berlina from 1968 also came under the hammer.
The 2000 Spider Touring from 1960 (CHF 140,000 to 160,000), the Duetto Spider from 1966 (CHF 70,000 to 90,000) and the 2600 Sprint from 1964 (CHF 65,000 to 80,000) could be classified more as super classics.
The Fiat range is again divided into two parts. On the one hand, there are classic bread-and-butter cars such as a 131 Panorama CL from 1981 or a 124 Special from 1972. On the other hand, there are some special bodies from Vignale or Monterosa based on Fiat 600 and Fiat 1500, i.e. real rarities.
In between are two Fiat 600 Multipla and a 130 Coupé.
Of course, the five Lambrettas and the two Ape two-wheelers from Piaggio are also Italian.
Star carriers
With 27 cars, cars with a Mercedes star are the most strongly represented at the St. Moritz auction; with an average age of 44 years, they are comparatively young, and pre-war cars are just as generally absent from this auction.
There are also many, albeit more luxurious, bread-and-butter cars like a 190E, a 280 E or a 280 TE for sale in the Mercedes range.
But there are also some cars that go beyond the scope, such as a comparatively inexpensive Mercedes-Benz 500 E from 1992 (CHF 60,000 to 70,000), the 190E 2.3-16 from 1984, which Niki Lauda drove in a race of these cars at the Nürburgring, which is now expected to cost CHF 400,000 to 500,000. An SL 500 from 2005 and a 220 S convertible from 1957 are also on offer (CHF 130,000 to 160,000).
Several cars in the commercial vehicle segment are also looking for new owners in St. Moritz.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen cars are also well represented.
A first and second generation GTI each come under the hammer, a Beetle, an early Golf GLS and a Golf Cabriolet from 1986, plus three VW Type 2 buses.
Mention should also be made of the "exotics", as there are also a few of these.
On September 15, 2023, you can bid for an off-road Volvo C303 4x4 from 1976, a Renault 4 from 1967, an NSU Ro80 from 1973 or a Chevrolet Corvair 700 from 1960.
Two Citroëns are also on offer. In any case, there will be no lack of variety in St. Moritz.
To avoid later registration problems or unexpected customs expenses, it is advisable to study the description texts and documents carefully in advance.
