RM/Sotheby's will once again be putting cars and motorcycles under the hammer at Motorworld Munich on November 23, 2024. The 62 vehicles, four of which have two wheels, were estimated at EUR 65.6 million in total, which means EUR 1.06 million per vehicle lot. The auction will begin on Saturday at 16:00, and the vehicles can be inspected the day before and on the day of the auction. 68% of the vehicles will go under the hammer without a reserve price, but it is doubtful whether this will result in any bargains.
64 years old on average
The cars (excluding motorcycles) are on average 63.7 years old and are expected to attract an average of EUR 1.13 million from bidders. With 15 pre-war vehicles, this proportion is comparatively high.
Extensive BMW selection
Of the 62 vehicles, 25 are from BMW, with a further five from EMW, the East German successor brand.
All motorcycles on offer were manufactured by BMW/EMW.
In second place in the brand hit parade is Aston Martin with eight cars and Mercedes-Benz with seven. Four Porsche, three Ferrari and three Veritas complete the list of manufacturers represented with at least three vehicles.
Several 327 and 328 variants stand out among the 25 BMW/EMWs, as well as an M1 with paintwork by Walter Maurer from 1979.
There is also an M3 from 1988, a Z8 from 2000 and a 3.0 CLS from 1972 for sale.
The wide range of BMW vehicles also includes an early 3/20 AM 4 from 1933 and an M6 from 2005, so BMW fans should take a particularly close look at the selection.
With and without a star
In addition to the seven Mercedes-Benz cars, the star-related portfolio also includes a Benz, a Mercedes and a Mercedes-Knight.
At EUR 3.8 to 5 million, the Mercedes Indianapolis Racer Type 122 from 1923 is actually the most expensive car in this group, followed by the Mercedes-Benz 710 SS Roadster from Corsica from 1929.
Of course, the 300 SL is not missing either, it is available as a roadster and as a gullwing.
The other gullwing
In addition to the W198 from Mercedes-Benz, a gullwing from the Styling Garage is also up for auction in Munich.
Built on a 500 SEC from 1984, the modern gullwing coupé is now expected to cost EUR 350,000 to 400,000.
A DTM TT
Laurent Aïello once drove a yellow Abt-Audi TT-R Coupé in the 2000 DTM season.
Now, after its restoration and 500 test kilometers, this car is looking for a new owner for around EUR 400,000 to 600,000.
Older and younger Astons
The selection of sports coupés from the Aston DB 4-6 era is extensive.
They are presented in varying conditions, as documented by the estimated prices, which range from EUR 175,000 to 850,000. A detailed inspection of the documentation and the condition of these vehicles is highly recommended.
Three times Veritas
The opportunity to buy a Veritas at auction is rare.
RM/Sotheby's in Munich can offer an RS from 1948, a Meteor single-seater from 1951 and a "grandmother" from 1947. The estimated values are between EUR 250,000 and 800,000.
Open Porsche
Three open-top Porsches from 1955 to 1957 will go under the hammer in Munich.
In terms of value, the 550 Spyder from 1955 naturally occupies a top position. This is an example delivered to the USA with chassis number 550-0072, which has now been estimated at EUR 3.4 to 4.2 million.
The price of a 356 A Carrera GT Speedster from 1957 with the same Fuhrmann engine is significantly lower and is estimated to cost EUR 650,000 to 800,000.
The cheapest entry into an open Porsche could be EUR 190,000 to 200,000, for which you would then get a 356 A 1600 Speedster from 1956. That sounds like little money, the reason for this may lie in the "restoration work performed largely to original specification" remark.
Pretzels and pre-war Opels
Of course, there are also some vehicles of other makes.
There are two interesting Opels to mention, namely an Olympia OL38 Roadster with glass bodywork from 1940, which was estimated at EUR 20,000 to 30,000 and, like 37 other cars, will go under the hammer without a reserve price. Not everything about this Opel seems to be clear down to the last detail, but it is certainly visually impressive.
The technology donor, or rather one of its successors, is also offered with a factory body, an Opel Olympia from 1951, and at the same price.
For the same amount of money you could also buy a 1951 VW Beetle, which of course comes with the two-piece rear window. It was painted tank gray for a movie and actually needs a restoration, but according to RM/Sotheby's, the car could also be enjoyed in its current form.
The range of vehicles in Munich is therefore broad, and three Italian exotics have not even been mentioned, namely a beautifully presented Dino 206 GT from 1969, a Ferrari 512 BBI from 1983 and an almost new Ferrari Monza SP1 from 2022, which is one of the most valuable cars.
