RM/Sotheby's has announced 89 cars for the auction at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elégance at the beginning of March 2022. Strictly speaking, however, there are only (still) 87 cars, as lot 106 is a 2:3 scale children's car and lot 124, a Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV from 1987, has already been withdrawn.
The dominant brand is Porsche with 18 vehicles, followed by Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz with seven, Packard with six and Cadillac and Jaguar with five cars.
On average, the vehicles are around 53 years old and are expected to change hands for an average of USD 571,000, which would result in total sales of just over USD 50 million on March 5, 2022. 34 percent of the cars are offered without a minimum price, including, of course, mainly the cheaper cars under USD 150,000, but also some valuable cars such as a Porsche 911 Turbo S from 1994, which was estimated at USD 900,000 to 1.2 million.
Old against (almost) new
A fifth of the cars are from the pre-war period, while the number of cars after 1992 (i.e. youngtimers and neoclassics) comprises 22 vehicles. The very old and very young cars also dominate the most expensive lots, with two from the pre-war period and four from the modern era in the top six.
The most valuable was a 1934 Packard Twelve Individual Custom Convertible Victora, estimated at USD 3.75 to 4.5 million. It is followed by a Ferrari LaFerrari, a Bugatti Chiron Sport and a McLaren Speedtail.
The fifth most valuable car is a 1930 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Sedan for USD 2 to 2.4 million, followed by a 1994 Bugatti EB 110 GT, which is listed in the catalog as a prototype and pre-production example for USD 2 to 2.5 million.
Super classics non-stop
Behind the very expensive cars, there is a whole series of super classics in terms of value, as can be seen at many auctions. Two Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs from 1955 as a Gullwing and 1962 as a Roaster are expected to find a new owner for around USD 1.4 to 1.7 million, while a Shelby 289 Cobra from 1964 is being offered for USD 1.1 to 1.3 million.
A 1961 Maserati 3500 GT Spyder Vignale is estimated at USD 850,000 to 1.1 million, while a 1970 Aston Martin DB6 Mk2 Vantage was estimated at USD 700,000 to 775,000.
A selection of special 911 and 356 Porsche cars completes the line-up of super classics, complemented by cars such as a 1968 Iso Grifo GL Series 1 or one of only a few Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray cars built in 1963 with a split rear window and Z06 engine.
The BMW 3.0 CLS from 1975 with a winged engine, which is looking for a new garage for USD 325,000 to 375,000, is certainly also a super classic.
And these are just a few examples.
The Rolls-Royce with Worblaufen bodywork
A Rolls-Royce 20/25 from 1931 is interesting from a European and historical point of view. The GFT31 chassis was originally intended to be built by Carrosserie Million-Guiet in Paris, but was then fitted by Gangloff in Colmar, only to be converted into a drophead coupé by Carosserie Worblaufen just six years later.
The extremely elegant car has survived in this form and was completely restored between 2015 and 2018, regardless of the cost. According to RM, it is probably the best-restored car of this type and the estimated price of USD 175,000 to 250,000 seems almost moderate.
Many special bodies
In any case, there is no shortage of cars with special bodies, not least because of the high proportion of pre-war vehicles. For example, there is a whole selection of Cadillacs with 8, 12 and 16-cylinder engines.
But the Delahaye 135 M from 1947 with Chapron body or the Cunningham C-3 from 1953 as a convertible naturally also belong to this category.
Two other cars received their bodywork from Zagato, while the 1955 Dodge Firebomb is a Ghia masterpiece.
914 Festival
RM can offer no fewer than three Porsche 914s at the Amelia auction. They range from a four-cylinder two-liter for USD 50,000 to 70,000 to a 914/6 from 1971 with M471 equipment, i.e. wide cheeks, for USD 475,000 to 525,000.
In between is the 914/6 from 1970, which is offered for USD 100,000 to 125,000.
Speedster selection
The selection of Porsche Speedster models is also quite impressive, although the classic 356 Speedster in its original form is missing. In its place, however, there is once again a Zagato Speedster from the "Sanction Lost" series to chew on.
Two 911 G-Speedsters as well as a 964 Speedster from 1994 and a 997 Speedster from 2011 round off the package.
Exotic cars
The very exotic cars may not make up a large proportion of RM/Sotheby's auction offerings, but they are still worthy of note. For example, there is the three-wheeled Davis Divan from 1948, which you certainly don't see on every street corner and which must have caused a stir in the past with its futuristic appearance.
USD 150,000 to 175,000 may seem like a lot for just three bikes, but given the rarity, this price seems entirely possible.
The Porsche 924 GTS from 1981 is also really rare. In fact, only 15 of the total of around 400 evolution models were delivered in this specification for use in racing. The red car on offer was never driven, which is why it only has 63 km on the clock today. The rare "new car" is now expected to fetch USD 350,000 to 450,000.
And the Spyker C8 from 2006 on offer is certainly one of the more exotic cars.
More information and pictures of the individual cars can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
