The RM/Sotheby's auction on November 5, 2022 in London will perhaps go down in history as the best in years. It will be held at Marlborough House and with 50 cars, the number of vehicles is manageable. The average age of 40 years shows that there are still a lot of relatively young cars on show, not least vehicles that are currently very much in vogue and for which one can even hope for new price records.
For non-Britons, it may be interesting to note that only 44 percent of vehicles are right-hand drive. In addition, 54 percent of the cars are offered without a minimum price.
In total, the cars were estimated to be worth around GBP 41.9 million, meaning that GBP 838,050 is expected per vehicle.
The auction is dominated by the Ferrari brand, from which 16 of the cars originate. On average, they are only 26 years old. All other manufacturers are represented by a handful of cars at most.
Super sports cars from five decades
The Granturismo Collection has contributed more than a third of the cars on offer and anyone interested in super sports cars will find a truly impressive selection.
For example, you can buy practically all of Ferrari's super sports cars, i.e. the 288 GTO, F40, F50, Enzo and LaFerrari.
Two legendary Lamborghinis are also for sale, namely a Lamborghini Miura P400 SV from 1971 and a Lamborghini Countach LP5000 S from 1984.
Three Bugatti cars go under the hammer, including two EB110 derivatives and a Chiron.
From Jaguar there is an XJ220, a particularly rare XJ220 S and the XJR-15 built by Walkinshaw.
A Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring from 1973 will also go under the hammer. At GBP 325,000 to 375,000, it is comparatively reasonably priced, at least at first glance.
Young Japanese super classics
Fans of Japanese classics should keep an eye on the four Nippon sports cars.
These include a Toyota Supra RZ-S Twin-Turbo from 2002, a Mazda RX-7 Spirit R Type-A from 2002, a Honda NSX-T from 2001 and a Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II from 2002.
The estimated prices are between GBP 70,000 and 160,000 and they are all offered without a reserve price.
Group B cars
Three rally cars will also go under the hammer in London, two Lancia and one Audi.
The 1985 Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 Group B works car in particular is asking a high price, namely GBP 1.75 to 2.25 million.
A Lancia Delta S4 Group B works car from 1985 is expected to be similarly expensive, while the Lancia 037 Group B works car from 1982 was estimated at "only" GBP 950,000 to 1.2 million. The Lancia is also available without a reserve price.
Not in rally trim, but at least as a Group B evolution model, the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 from 1984 is for sale, for which GBP 180,000 to 220,000 is being asked.
French cars with special bodies
Although super sports cars dominate the auction, RM/Sotheby's was also able to find several French sports cars from the post-war period with special bodies.
Three Delahaye and a Talbot-Lago, all with interesting shapes, come under the hammer.
Freddy Mercury's Rolls
Although the singer of the rock band Queen, Freddy Mercury, could not drive a car himself, he bought a used 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow through his company in 1979, which he probably used more than just occasionally as a chauffeur.
Because the car has not been moved for some time, the estimated value is a reasonable GBP 20,000 to 30,000.
The rare Frazer Nash
Only 11 Mille Miglia models were built by Frazer Nash. The car on offer was exhibited at the Turin Motor Show in 1952 and has an inline six-cylinder engine under the hood derived from the BMW 328.
According to RM, you can take part in practically all major events with it, but first you would have to part with GBP 550,000 to 650,000.
Two DB5s in very different conditions
Two right-hand drive Aston Martin DB5s from 1964 are up for auction in London.
There is a choice between a project that is looking for a new owner for GBP 400,000 to 500,000 and an example restored in 2015/2016 that once belonged to Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan and is now expected to cost GBP 625,000 to 675,000.
Before bidding, it is advisable to carefully study the auction conditions and the customs situation of the cars on offer. Further information and many pictures can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
